Family Life Programs mostly unknown Conducted surveys and interviews with 50+ people regarding Family Life Marriage Prep in the West needed new life What WeLearned… Programs needed to help married couples before they have problems Families lack knowledge about faith - can’t pass on what they don’t have Family Life Staff lack integration with Diocesan Staff Same things have been done in the same way for years

Created One Office: Family/Respect Life Ministry Biggest Change: • Many issues overlap • Beginning and end of life • Chastity Education • Life issues happen in the midst of family • Vital Education in both ministries: • Respect for the life and dignity of the human person • Promote the Sacrament of Marriage, and openness to life • Promote God’s plan for life and love • Promote Catholic Teaching and suggestions about accompaniment for those facing end-of-life decisions

Lack of time together Getting to religious education & or Mass Economics/ Money Living together or divorced Media/Internet/ Texting Input from the Diocesan Pastoral Council: Greatest Challenges Facing Families Today… Alcohol/Bullying/Drugs Sports & otheroutside activities Single parents Split or blended families Unemployment/low paying jobs/both parents work Non-Christian culture Commitment to marriage Communication Lack of support groups Closing Catholic Schools/Tuition costs Education Rural areas not close to a church Role models Elderly Contraception Abortion Apathy Marriage Prep Gay Marriage Church is not cool

  11. Married Couples • Online Catholic Couple Checkup. Can be done as a couple or as a group experience in a parish. • Promote the BAR (Building Authentic Relationships – pilot at Divine Mercy Parish, Central Square + Sacred Heart, Cicero • Begin a BAR in each region. Invite couples who attend Marriage Preparation • Offer online parenting inventory - options for traditional, step-parent, adoptive, and foster families Other Responses: Expand MarriageMinistry Engaged Couples: -Standardized use of pre-marital inventory (Prepare/Enrich is suggested inventory) -Train facilitators/mentors to administer Prepare/Enrich (pastors, deacons, lay people) -Provideadditional online programs for engaged couples -Provide an online Pre- Cana option for couples unable to attend Diocesan sessions

Provide online resources for women's issues • Recommended parish study/prayer group programs • Family/Respect Life presence at annual Catholic Women's Conference Some Additional Suggestions: Family/Respect Life must be woven into Evangelization, Youth & Young Adult Ministry , and Faith Formation All should work together Women's Ministry • Provide online resources for men's issues • Recommended parish study/prayer group programs • Family/Respect Life presence at annual IGNITE Catholic Men's Conference Men's Ministry
