ProyectoAlimento IIISuccess in Food and Nutrition Award Number: 2009-38422-19966 ∙ Award amount: $299,983 USDA Strategic Goal #5: Improve the nation’s nutrition and health CSREES-HIS Project St. Philip’s College and the University of the Incarnate Word ProyectoAlimento III, a continuation of a 2005-07 and 2007-09 USDA grant award, will again prove beneficial in achieving the objectives and successful outcomes of the 2009-11 project. • USDA/CSREES Priority Areas • Enhance equity for underrepresented groups • Strengthen recruitment and retention • Support students via mentoring and financial assistance • Form alliances with other Hispanic Serving Institutions • ProyectoAlimento III Activities • “The Cutting Edge” – UIW conducts special classes in the Food Science Lab • “Meet Your Nutrition Family” – An evening meal with ProyectoAlimento students and family members • The Hunger Banquet, “World Food Day” – PA students serving, monitoring meal • “Olive Oil” Tour and Tasting – PA students make posters and presentations to Culinary classes • Attendance by ProyectoAlimento students at local and state nutrition conferences learn about employment opportunities making presentations, scholarship programs Evaluation: Evaluation surveys, group briefings and student focus groups are conducted by Dr. Arturo Vega, program evaluator. Earlier evaluation efforts have provided a profile of a successful student which will assist in targeting future recruitment efforts and supporting students’ needs. Expected Impact: ProyectoAlimento has already broadened students’ perspectives about food-related careers Higher educational attainment of Hispanic students in the field of nutrition Objectives: Recruit Hispanic students into food and nutrition programs in higher education Retain Hispanic students in higher education programs in food and nutrition Increase Hispanic student transfer rates to a university program in nutrition Beneficiaries: 1 - $50,000 USDA-HIS Student scholarship 6 - $750 SPC Culinary Arts Student USDA-HIS scholarships 6 - $500 SPC Culinary Arts Student Nutrition-related Internship Stipends 6 - $300 Culinary Arts Uniform Stipends 20 - $75 Culinary Arts Uniform Stipends 15 - $1000 UIW Introduction to Dietetics (Nutrition 1102) Scholarships 3 - $8,500 Transfer Student Scholarships Current Successes for Fall 2009 13 students have participated an average of 5 times each in a total of 7 project activities.
