What You’ll Learn… * Throughout this unit you will gain knowledge about the ancient civilizations of the Aztec, Maya, and Inca Stuff You’ll Need… Classroom textbooks: World Cultures and Geography Latin America and Canada Access to the internet and library Previous knowledge from class or research about the ancient civilizations Basic research skills One or more of the following software programs Paint Timeliner 5.0 Inspiration Microsoft Publisher Microsoft Photostory 3 Windows Movie Maker Web Design with Adobe Dreamweaver

  3. What You Should Know… Students should know basic information about the dates of each the early civilizations: Aztec, Maya, and Inca. Students should know information about the geography and location of each civilization, religious beliefs, the daily life of the people in that civilization, arts and music, calendar systems, and ruins to visit today. You may need to do some internet research to refresh your memory! M a y Inca Aztec

  4. HINT! Think of these types of sample questions when you are doing research. Would you like to be an Aztec sacrifice? How about a trip to Machu Picchu? Can you write your name using hieroglyphics? You will need to take some notes during this project!

  5. What You Should Know… Inspiration Web … Using Inspiration create a graphic organizer that includes information about the three civilizations: Aztec, Maya, and Inca. Your graphic organizer should include 8-10 facts about each civilization and pictures that best represent the culture of each civilization.

  6. What You Have Learned … Which civilization would you like to be a part of? Now that you know a little bit more about the ancient civilizations of Latin America, chose one civilization to continue to research. The following activities will revolve around the civilization of your choice. ? ? ?

  7. What You Should Know… If you need to collect some background information about your chosen civilization, please use the internet to research this information. You will research one civilization in particular. Get the specifics about geography, location, arts, music, etc. This will be the focus of your final multimedia project. You may need to take some notes during this project!

  8. Do It! Choose one civilization to continue with for this section. Create/design/draw a map that shows the location of your chosen civilization. Your map can be downloaded from the internet and imported into Paint. You could also draw your own freehand map or download an outline map from the internet. It should be labeled and your chosen civilization should be colored. If you draw and color on paper you will need to scan your map so you can include it in your final presentation.

  9. Do It! Using TimeLiner 5.0 create a timeline for the civilization of your choice. Please include 8-10 important events that took place in your civilization’s history (ex. date of the rise/fall of your civilization, important leaders) Have some fun with this project and be creative. Choose your own font, color, pictures, etc. to enhance your timeline.

  10. Do It! Travel Brochure Pretend that you have been hired by a travel agency to design a travel brochure that will inform potential visitors to the Latin American country or countries where your civilization is located. Tell them about the ancient ruins they can visit and the civilization that once lived there. Using Microsoft Publisher, create a travel brochure from the projects created in class and additional information that you have researched. Include all information that you feel would be important to share with potential tourists. Projects could include: text, images, hyperlinks to other sites, and cited sources for your information.

  11. Presentation (Proof of Learning) Your final project will be a multimedia software file turned in and presented in class if time allows.

  12. Do It! Presentation . . . In a multimedia presentation demonstrate what you have learned about the following: Use the research you have gathered and any other you need to make a multimedia presentation about your chosen civilization. Include the following: Information about the geography , location, religious beliefs, daily life, arts, music, calendar system, and ruins or your civilization. 8 – 10 interesting facts Important events in the history of your civilization. Your map Items from your travel brochure Include anything you find that would be interesting to your audience. Continued on the next slide.
