  1. PBIS Lesson: Cornell Note Taking Strategy and Study Habits Think: How have you studied for classes now and in the past? Does it help you in your studies or does it seem like a waste of time where you don’t learn anything? Do you study like your friends study? Does how your friends study work for you? How do you take notes during class? Do you think that impacts how you study outside of class?

  3. Cornell Notes • Cornell Notes is a specific style of note taking that is highly effective. • Cornell Notes can be used in any subject area class and can help you break down the information into manageable and understandable chunks.

  4. Prepare for Notetaking • There are copies of preprinted notetaking sheets in the Media Center for student use. • Warrior Note pages are free and available every day! • Or you can easily prepare your own paper! • If you use this approach, divide your paper as displayed on the pictures on the right.

  5. Cornell Notes • Use the largest section to take notes from the lesson, lecture, or class.  • Use the left column to record keywords and questions about the information covered.  • Reflect on the lesson and summarize the information in your own words after you are done taking notes. • It is a good strategy to always label your work with a heading or title and date all your papers.

  6. Smart Study Habits • Now take Cornell Notes on the following video about study habits. • “Scientifically Proven Best Ways to Study” • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJbKXmujI00

  7. Smart Study Habits • Study in small chunks (15 minutes) • Take Breaks • Exercise daily • Study each day and not just before the test • Talk about the material with others (test & quiz each other) • Strike a pose before you test

  8. Use Cornell Notes to Study • Cornell notes can easily be used to study. • Fold your notes back on the vertical line between the keyword/question section and the main notes section. • Use the key words and questions to quiz yourself on the material.

  9. Ticket Out the Door • Before leaving class, think about other ways in which you can best prepare for upcoming assessments. • Write down three additional effective study habits that you could engage in outside of what was mentioned in the video. Write these down on the back of your Cornell Notes paper and we will discuss as a class before you leave!
