  1. MCCA Enhancements Authors: Date: 2009-03-06 Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia

  2. Abstract The presentation presents the current status of MCCA The presentation highlights the benefits of a tight MCCA and power saving coupling The presentation outlines enhancements to further improve operation in MCCA enabled mesh STAs Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia

  3. What is MCCA? • MCCA enables reliable and robust real time (high AC) data transmission between two mesh STAs • MCCA reservation mechanisms improve data transmission efficiency • The mesh STA that proposes or accepts a new MCCA reservation needs an understanding of the existing MCCA reservations in the neighborhood Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia

  4. MCCA and Power Saving MSTAs • MCCA reservations improve data transmission efficiency which reduces power consumption • Power saving mesh STAs need to minimize listening to the wireless medium as it consumes power • Power management modes are per peering • MCCA usage should not restrict mesh STAs in selecting the power management mode that fits best • How mesh STA follows the MCCA advertisements is implementation issue • Only needed functionality to mandate is that MCCA advertisements are followed and mesh STA should avoid transmitting during other mesh STA reservation Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia

  5. MCCA Overview • Mesh STA is MCCA capable • Mesh STA has set MCCA enabled bit • Mesh STA may set MCCA Enabled bit, if it is aware of neighboring mesh STAs’ MCCA reservations and reported TX-RX times • Mesh STA is considered to be aware of neighboring mesh STAs’ MCCA reservations after scanning media for 1-2 seconds (dot11MCCAScanDuration) • After MCCA Enabled bit is set and scan time elapsed, the mesh STA may initiate and/or accept MCCAOP reservations Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia

  6. Challenges to combine MCCA & power saving • Detection of the newlyMCCA enabled mesh STA requires background scanning • MCCA Enabled mesh STAs in power save mode need to scan for neighboring mesh STAs that start to operate in MCCA Enabled state • The background scanning consumes power • D2.07 requires MCCA enabled mesh STA to operate in active or light sleep mode to all its peerings • Breaks link specific power save model • It should be enough to receive the MCCAOP Advertisements from the neighborhood • Neighborhood may also contain non-peer mesh STAs Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia

  7. Improvement to MCCA • Mesh STAs that transit to MCCA Enabled state transmits notification to MCCA Enabled mesh STAs • This reduces the need for background scanning • The detection of new MCCA Enabled mesh STAs is faster and more reliable • The mesh STA shall periodically receive MCCAOPs from neighboring mesh STAs • The mesh STA may operate in any power mode toward its peer mesh STAs • This reduces the need to eliminate unused/not frequently used peerings Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia

  8. How is the MCCA notification sent? • A Mesh STA sends an individually addressed notify message containing information of the beacon transmission times and that MCCA is used or will be used soon • The notify frames may be transmitted during the scanning of MCCA reservations in the neighborhood • MCCA Enabled mesh STAs shall monitor MCCA announcements in order to maintain MCCA utilization information Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia

  9. New Phases of MCCA • The compatibility of power save and MCCA is achieved through defining rules for • Collecting information of existing MCCA reservations before starting to use MCCA (as now) • Informing other (power saving) MCCA Enabled Mesh STAs on the MCCA usage (new requirement) • Operation during the MCCAOP, Peer Service Period utilization with MCCA (as now) Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia

  10. New Phases of MCCA Triggers to changes MCCA phases Mesh STA decides to start MCCA use Mesh STA fulfills conditions to start MCCA use. Mesh STA sets MCCA enabled bit Mesh STA decides to end MCCA use Time Operation in local mesh STA Idle • Collects information of MCCA utilization in neighborhood • informs neighborhood of the start of the MCCA use • MCCA in use • Mesh STA may make and accept MCCA reservations • Mesh STA periodically wakes up to receive neighboring Mesh STAs’ MCCA announcements Idle Time • No duration limitation • No power consumption due to MCCA • Operation in phase max 1-2 seconds • Due to MCCA Mesh STA operates in awake state. • No duration limitation • No power consumption due to MCCA • No duration limitation • Reception of a neighbor mesh STAs’ MCCA announcements • 1 announcement per 1 second per 1 neighbor mesh STA Phase duration and estimated power consumption due MCCA use Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia

  11. Recap, peer service period use with MCCA Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia

  12. Peer Service Period use in MCCAOP • A peer service period is triggered at the MCCAOP start time, if the receiver mesh STA in MCCAOP operates light or deep sleep power management mode for the transmitter mesh STA in MCCAOP • The MCCAOP transmitter is the transmitter in triggered peer service period • The MCCAOP receiver is the receiver in triggered peer service period • No peer service period is triggered, if the receiver mesh STA in MCCAOP operates in active mode for the transmitter mesh STA Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia

  13. Peer service period termination • The peer service period continues until it is successfully terminated by acknowledged null or data frame with set EOSP bit from transmitter to receiver • The peer service period is needed to enable the receiver to know when it may return to doze state • The peer service period may be terminated after the MCCAOP Jarkko Kneckt, Nokia
