  3. Academic Integrity Committee • The Committee was formed in 2011. • Purpose: To bring clarification to the process of reporting violations of Academic Integrity. • Surveys • Research • Best Practices

  4. Goal for Academic Integrity Code • Shaping their character. • Upholding high standards for ourselves and for our students. • Modeling character. • Ignoring lapses in integrity, we are accepting that behavior?

  5. Best Practices • Designing tests and assignments. • Establish policies and procedures. • Clearly and explicitly state your intended penalties in your course syllabus.

  6. Highlight ethical issues as they relate to our personal and professional lives. • Proctor your tests. • Use Turn-It-In and other means to identify violations.

  7. What Violations of Academic Integrity should be reported? • Teachable Moment or Deliberate? • Honest errorson the part of unaware, ill-informed or unprepared students, • Don’t report. Teach them how to do it properly. • Deliberate effortsto cheat on tests or to present someone else’s work as one’s own. • Report them as Violations of Academic Integrity.

  8. You are not the Bad Guy • Identify and discipline students who choose to violate academic integrity. Report them. • Understand that reporting a Violation of Academic Integrity is a serious matter that becomes part of a student’s record here at the College.

  9. How to report Violations of Academic Integrity • Establish the Allegation: Begin the Violation of Academic Integrity (VAI) Form; provide documentation; assign an Academic Consequence. • Document: Describe the alleged violation on the VAI Form and check the categories that apply: Plagiarism, Cheating on an Exam, Cheating by sharing information, and Other.

  10. Assigning an Academic Consequence • Any and all Academic Consequences for Violations of Academic Integrity must be consistent with policies explicitly stated in that instructor’s course syllabus.

  11. Meeting with the Student: • Explain the allegation. • Hear the student. • Explain the Academic Consequence and VAI Process. • Explain that the student should continue to complete work until the issue has been adjudicated. • You and student both sign VAI Form.

  12. Student Meets With Supervisor. • Send the form and documentation to your immediate Supervisor. • Immediate Supervisor Contacts the Student for a meeting. • No response or cannot reach the student, the Immediate Supervisor will render a decision and send the VAI Form to Judicial Affairs.

  13. Student is informed of her/his options. • Student can explain or offer evidence to refute or question the allegation. • The Supervisor will render a decision. • If the student accepts the Academic Consequence. • If the student does not accept.

  14. Judicial Affairs • Judicial Affairs will contact the student. • If the student admits to the allegation, JA will render a judicial consequence and document the outcome.

  15. If the student denies the allegation • JA will set a hearing date with the Student Disciplinary Committee. • May request further information and documentation prior to the hearing. • Every effort will be made to proceed quickly within ten business days from the date of the report.

  16. The Student Disciplinary Committee • Representatives from Faculty, Campus Safety, and the Administration. • Student informed of the decision and document the outcome. • If the student disagrees…may request an administrative review by the Vice President of Academic Affairs and/or the Vice President of Student Development.

  17. Outcomes of the Judicial Affairs Hearing • Cleared of the Violation • Found in Violation • Written Warning. • Found in Violation • Additional Sanctions
