  2. The Problem Your term as an officer is coming to an end and new officers are being selected. • How do you leave your position gracefully? • How do you ensure that the new officers are ready to continue to provide your organization with strong leadership?

  4. Preparing for leadership transitions • Develop a transition plan • Establish a timeline and checklist • Set your successor up for success

Develop a plan There are many benefits to having a transition plan in place: • Preserves organizational knowledge and history • Minimizes confusion of leadership turnover • Provides outgoing leaders with a sense of closure • Utilizes the valuable contributions of experienced leaders • Increases the knowledge and confidence of incoming leadership • Minimizes the loss of momentum for the group

Communication is important • It is crucial for outgoing leadership to communicate with incoming leadership for a successful transition • Outgoing leaders: • Reach out to incoming leaders ASAP • Agree on a transition timeline • Be open and transparent, share anything that would have helped you when you assumed the role • Offer your advice and consultation throughout the transition • Incoming leaders: • Listen to the advice and lessons learned from outgoing leadership • Reach out if you have questions • Consider reaching out to past leaders as well as outgoing leaders
