  4. An analogy • Ice dancing and ice hockey • Similar skills needed for both ...but very different sports • You wouldn’t want to get them mixed up! • The same goes with project work and product work • You wouldn't want to get these two mixed up either!

  6. Analyse the type of work - build a work filter • Look for ‘tendencies’ • Complexity • Size • New customer • Difficult technology • What is the level of the unknown?

  7. Build the filter carefully! • Avoid formulas and algorithms • Avoid guess work • How about using ‘spidey sense*’! • Instinct and experience wins out over ‘you have scored 74/100’! • Does this need a Project Manager? * With thanks to Geoff Cooper, Kingston Univ.

So what if it is Agile and complicated? • Stay calm! • Don't reinvent the wheel • Existing frameworks and structures are fine • PRINCE2, DSDM, ‘sprint zero’ • What you already have! • ...probably ‘waterfall’ • ...possibly built by necessity? • Beware ‘new frameworks’ • ...what is their motivation? • ...where have they come from?

  9. Try ‘one size fits all’ • Controversial • Counter-intuitive • ...but ice skating is ice skating! • It has many advantages: • Transferring skills • Same language • Optimisation • Use 3 basic settings • If you get it wrong... • Admit it, Back track, Go again

The ‘agilometer’ • Works with the filter mentioned earlier • How agile can we be? • Decide on a case by case basis • Remember, It is not a binary decision • Again look at the conditions and tendencies • KRC have taken a long time to ‘perfect’ this • ...it is not easy • ...and guess what... • ...you need to use your ‘spidey sense’ again! http://marvelanimated.wikia.com/wiki/Spider-Sense

Get organised. • Triage your work • From the French verb trier, meaning to separate, sift or select • This may need to happen at the programme level? • Avoid the classic ‘epic’ mistake • Its a bit like a job interview... • ...first impressions last • ...or a shot in golf • Start as you mean to go on!
