The Big6 is an approach devised by Mike Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz that helps users find information and solve problems in 6 simple steps. This method teaches how to define tasks, identify sources, find materials, gather information, use it effectively, and evaluate the results.

  2. Mike Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz devised this approach for gathering information and teaching technology skills.

  3. What Is the Big6?It can help you find information and solve problems in 6 steps. • Define your task. • What sources can I use? • Where can I find these materials? • What can I use from these sources? • How can I put this information together? • How will I know if I did it well?

  4. Step 1-First decide what you need to do.

  5. Step 2-decide which sources (books, Internet, reference materials) you need in order to gather your information.

  6. Step 3-Where do I look to find these sources-library books,reference books, the Internet?

  7. Step 4 What Can I Use from These Sources? • Take notes to answer the problem you are searching. • You may have notes from several different sources-books, encyclopedias, Internet, etc.

  8. Step 5-Using Information • Now it’s time to use the information for the report. • Remind the students not to copy directly from the sources used. • Be creative.

  9. Step 6-Evaluation • Look over the report. • Did you accomplish what you set out to do? • Check your spelling and grammar.
