  1. PRASA SIGNALLING PROGRAM 2011-2025

  2. 1. Network Resignalling • Period: 2011-2017 in all PRASA regions • Includes: • Prasa Regional CTCs • Bidirectional traffic • Replacing the old technology • It is the foundation for Wireless Signalling and correlated with the introduction of the new Rolling Stock • Deliverables: Resignalling of all three regions (electronic interlockings, axle counters, led signals, system monitoring,)

  3. Assets Protection Program(today – 2014) • Lobby for change of legislation for scrap dealers (one regional dealer for Eskom/Prasa/Gautrain, heavy punishment for asset thieves) • Protect rail land (brick & electric fence, alarms, video) • Code and chip the outside assets starting with copper cables (dot tint, invisible paint)

  4. Optical Fibre Network • Installation period 2012-2014 • Will complete the ring for high reliability communication required in Signalling. • Became the main mean of communication in signalling eliminating the copper cable. • Deliverables: FO rings in each region

  5. Radio Digital Signalling Network • Installation period: 2012-2017 • Replaces the obsolete analogue trunk radio being back-up for communication and later becoming main communication mean for Signalling. • Improve communication to the driver and support data transmission from and to new and oldRolling Stock. • Deliverables: Modern signalling networks in all three regions

  6. Wireless Signalling (MTCS) • Installation period: 2012 – 2020 (include in the RS tender document the signalling requirements) • Increase safety (ATP) and capacity. • Eliminates line-side signalling equipment (when complete fleet replaced)

  7. Semi-Automatic Train Operation • Installation period: 2014-2022 • Automates traffic. • Increase frequency of trains

  8. Virtual block • Installation period 2016-2025 • Distance between trains decreases or increases according with traffic requirements. • Traffic capacity increased up to maximum line potential.
