  1. Income-Based Exemptions from the Individual Mandate NOTE: The shaded region represents households that will likely be exempt from the individual mandate. In 2016, families of four with a 40 year old policyholder and with incomes ranging from about $61,000 to $150,000 will likely qualify for an exemption due to insurance premiums exceeding 8% of their income. Families below the tax filing threshold (projected to be $20,300 in 2016 for a married couple) will also be exempt. SOURCE: Kaiser Family Foundation
