Overview • Our policy is — • To provide a safe working environment for all employees • To meet or exceed all applicable laws governing workplace safety and health • Everyone has a role in making our workplace safe • All employees must follow safety and health rules and report accidents and potentially unsafe conditions • This course will provide an overview of key requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)

Safe Handling of Hazardous Substances • Knowledge and proper precautions help avoid injury and accidents • Some common substances in our workplace may contain hazardous chemicals • Products most likely to contain hazardous chemicals — • Paints and paint removers • Cleaning products • Photocopier and printer toners • Rubber cement and other glues

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) • MSDS is primary source of information about hazardous chemicals in the workplace • MSDS must include certain specified information • Emergency and clean-up procedures • Chemical names • Manufacturer’s phone number • MSDS for every hazardous chemical at worksite is available for review • We will periodically review with you – • Physical and health hazards of chemicals in the workplace • Identification of chemicals by appearance and odor • Procedures for handling chemicals • Location of MSDSs

  7. Pop Quiz! • Homer and Lenny receive a box containing several bottles of a new chemical they will be handling. When Lenny opens the box, an MSDS falls out. Lenny says, “Hey, that’s the MSDS.” Homer grabs it and says, “Pfft, boring! They can’t expect us to read all that! If chemicals were that dangerous, do you think they’d let someone like me handle them?” Homer makes the MSDS into a paper airplane and flies it down the hall, where it hits Frank, a co-worker who knows the significance of an MSDS. How might Frank respond to Homer? • “I’m taking this to your supervisor. At least he should know about the chemical you guys are about to handle.” • “You need to review this for your own protection and everyone else’s.” • “This is supposed to be posted on a bulletin board, near the work area, so that your supervisor and the paramedics will know what to do in case of an emergency.”

Reading Labels and Tags • Before using a hazardous chemical, read all labels and tags carefully • Manufacturer must label, tag or mark each primary container with — • Manufacturer's name and address • Product name and all hazardous ingredients • Any physical or health hazards When a chemical is stored in a secondary container, special labeling may be required • Before using a chemical in a secondary container, check with supervisor or Safety Officer

Personal Protective Equipment • You must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when required to do your job safely • Includes all clothing and accessories that protect against workplace danger • All employees must wear the required PPE • Take PPE training seriously • Sign training-attendance sheet if applicable • Always wear appropriate PPE on the job • Ask your supervisor or safety personnel if you do not know whether PPE is necessary

Industrial Machinery • All machinery must be used and serviced properly andsafely • Our organization will — • Provide training on safe use of equipment • Provide you with appropriate PPE • Make sure that proper machine guarding is in place • Wear the correct PPE • Design a program to protect you from injury from an accidental machine startup

Industrial Machinery (cont’d) • It is your responsibility to — • Follow all machine safety rules and lockoutprocedures • Abide by tags indicating a piece of equipment is outof use • Never stick hands or fingers into a machine • Wear the correct PPE • Certain "confined spaces" may be entered by permit only, including — • Any area not meant for continuous occupancy • Any area with unfavorable ventilation conditions • Pits, tanks, storage bins

Forklifts and Other Industrial Trucks • Training, licensing and authorization required to operatepowered industrial trucks  • It is your responsibility to — • Wear required PPE and seatbelt • Obey all driving rules • Never allow anyone to stand or walk under elevated part of the forklift • Never let anyone ride on a forklift • Know load maximum of forklift and follow inspection procedures • Use common sense and caution

Certain Disorders and Diseases • Cumulative trauma disorders or repetitive motion disorders • Caused by making same motion repeatedly or working inawkward position • Back strain, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome • We will make changes to address ergonomic hazards asappropriate • We will examine workstation design, work methods and tools • Report any injuries or signs of a hazard to your supervisor or to safety personnel • We train certain employees to prevent workplace exposure to bloodborne diseases • "Exposure control plan" identifies jobs that may involve exposure • Affected employees will be trained and offered vaccinations as appropriate

Accidents Will Happen • We will reward good safety behavior, discipline whennecessary and review safety programs periodically • Report all accidents to your supervisor or to appropriatesafety personnel • Report any injuries or signs of a hazard to your supervisor or to safety personnel • Recordkeeping of certain occupational injury/illness in an "OSHA 200 log" is required by law • We must notify OSHA within a short time of an accident • We will investigate accidents to determine their cause and prevent recurrence

Compliance Audits • We will periodically conduct safety and health inspectionsor audits • Cooperate with those performing audits and supply anynecessary information • Compliance with safety and health laws — • Protects employees • Helps avoid OSHA enforcement actions • You have a vital role in making safety and health compliance part of your job every day
