  1. Three-level Synthetic Strategy Towards Mixed-valence and Heterometallic [2×2] Gridlike Arrays Lindsay H. Uppadine, Dr., Jean-Marie Lehn, Prof. Dr. *

  2. The synthesis of heterometallic grids with precisely located metal ions is more problematic than a single metal containing grid • The possibility of addressing the metal ions individually through an external stimulus would allow information to be written and stored at specific sites within the array Gridlike Arrays

  3. Synthesis • a) MeNHNH2, MeOH • b) 2-acetylpyridine, MeOH. The 2-acetylpyridine unit mostly (13.5:1) reacts at the unhindered amine

  4. Synthesis • c) Co(OAc)24 H2O, MeOH • d) 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, MeOH • Co(II) and Co(III) have different preferred geometries which causes them to bind to different parts of the molecule allowing a grid to form • Co(II) is oxidised to Co(III) when an acetate anion acts as a base

  5. A three-tiered synthetic strategy was used to construct a mixed valence (2x2) Co2(II)Co2(III) grid as well as heterometallic analogues • The oxidation state of the cobalt ions can be modified according to the charge on the hydrazone moiety • In such motifs the oxidation states can be manipulated by external factors e.g. protons Conclusion
