What are the three states of matter? • 1. _________________________ • 2. _________________________ • 3. _________________________
Temperature and Phase Changes • When molecules move rapidly and farther apart, what is happening? • What is requires for a substance to change phases or states?
ENERGY is added to the substance and it is expanding. The substance is heating up and most likely changing phase. A solid would become a liquid and a liquid would become a gas.
Expansion and Contraction • What happens when heat is added to a substance? • What happens when the particles are cooled?
When heat is added to a substance EXPANSION occurs. The particles speed up and begin to move apart because they are vibrating so vigorously. • When particles are cooled CONTRACTION occurs, the particles slow down and move closer together.
CONDUCTION/CONVECTION/RADIATION • What is conduction? • What is convection? • What is radiation?
Forms of Energy • Can you name them?
