To get rich and to trade furs. Back then furs were very valuable.

They were trading fur to the Indians and selling them back in England. Once in a while they would compete by seeing who can get the most furs.

What are Voyageurs?

Because of the effectiveness of voyageurs, the NWC was able to challenge the HBC. The HBC started hiring their own voyageurs in 1815 to help them compete with the NWC.

Voyageurs: A woodsman, boatman, or guide employed by a fur company to transport goods and supplies between remote stations in Canada or the U.S. Northwest.

In a lot of Indian tribes alcohol was an devastating and bad part of the trade. The Indians got violent and drunk. For other people it was an important part of the trade.

Fur traders offered the Iroquois trade goods which included iron tomahawks, knives, axes, awls, fish hooks, cloth of various colors, woolen blankets, linen shirts, brass kettles, silver jewelry, assorted glass beads, guns and powder.
