  1. TORTURED SCRIPTURES I marvel that you are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there are some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ” (Gal. 1:6-7)

An Age Old Problem • Pervert – “to turn one thing into another”. • 2 Peter 3:15-16 “To wrest” – Twisted • 2 Cor. 2:17 – To corrupt – “To peddle, esp. for money.” • Some do it for “gain” – 2 Cor. 2:17; Titus 1:9 • Some thru ignorance – 2 Pet. 3:16 • Some are unstable • Some “force” the Scripture to prove a point not in the passage – Luke 16:15

Once This Was A “Simple” Problem • Once saved; always saved. • Faith only salvation. • “Baptizing” babies. • Predestination. • So many errors based on ignorance of Scriptures – “…you are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God” (Matt. 22:29). • But, now things get more complicated with subtle errors.

  4. The Gospel of Wealth • Prayer of Jabez – I Chron. 4:10 • Is he praying for wealth? • Is it in the context of Jabez enriching the world around him? • God does promise to meet our needs – Matt. 6:33 • But it is within a context of spirituality. • Paul in Phil. 4

  5. “Finding Ourselves” • Remember the 60’s (1960’s) • Matt. 16:25 – “Self help is no help at all. Self sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self” (The Message translation). • Jesus is really speaking of finding eternal life. • How many “self-help” books are in any “bookstore”? • Jesus looks beyond what it takes to please me. • He’s interested in saving my soul and using me in His kingdom.

  6. “God Just Wants Us To Be Our Best” • “God’s wisdom goes deep into the interior of his purposes…It’s not the latest message, but more like the oldest, what God determined as the way to bring out his best in us” (I Cor. 2:7) (again, The Message Trans.) • Read the real text. • A Mystery – now revealed. No longer a mystery. • Eph. 3:1-5 • Still hidden to the people of the world – but not by God’s choice. • The way to bring out the best in us is to have our sins forgiven by the blood of Christ.

  7. Are We A “Pleasure” to the Lord? • Gen. 6:8 – “Noah was a pleasure to the Lord.” (Living Bible) • Read the real text. • Noah was a good man, but he needed grace. • He wasn’t on the ark because of his own goodness. • Grace told him to build the ark. • Do we need grace? Even if we’re “good”. • Rom. 3:10; Luke 18:19

  8. Be On Guard • So many modern teachers pervert Scripture, even in the “Bibles” they use. • A “feel good” religion that requires nothing of us • Except a financial commitment, or an entrusting of our souls to them. • Satan still works today, sometimes thru “angels of light”, 2 Cor. 11:13-15
