  2. What is Good Customer Service? Good customer service is one that can vary between businesses and even between customers. When you are applying for a role in customer service or where you will have customer contact, a job interviewer will often want to know what your idea of good customer service is. Questions such as ‘what is good customer service’ and ‘what does customer service mean to you’ are common interview questions.

  3. Answer ideas There are two main approaches to the question of what is good customer service. If you personally haven’t worked in a customer service environment, then it is a good idea to use examples of where you have received good customer services. We’ve all had them – people in a shop who have made a positive (or negative) impact on our shopping experience. This can be used to explain your views. If you have worked in a service industry, then you can use your personal experience of when you or a colleague have given excellent service and what it is was that you did.

  4. How to handle the customer service questions In fact, those tricky customer services related questions can catch out many people. What most interviewers are looking for is an idea of what you think means good customer service and how you would provide this to people as part of your role. This means you will want to give specific answers in your examples to show either your personal experience or those you have seen given by others. There are some main customer service elements to concentrate on including: ● Product awareness – it doesn’t matter what the product is, you need to exhibit enough knowledge about it to make the customer feel confident Attitude – a smile or a friendly greeting is key to making a positive first impression and makes the customer feel more comfortable and valued. This should be paired with patience to understand their problem and help as best as possible Efficiency – offering the customer a speedy reaction and a speedy answer to their question Solving problems – the key to good customer service is helping them solve their problems, no matter how vague the request ● ● ●

Service provided ● Good customer service is about having a comprehensive knowledge of your inventory, understanding the products that you offer and helping customers to make the right choice based on what they tell you. Working at X, I would spend a few minutes each week looking at the latest products in stock, so I knew about them and could advise customers Good customer service is being friendly and helpful, thinking about how people feel and reacting towards them in the right way. Even a smile can help make them feel good and positive about the experience Being efficient and friendly is key to good customer service. You want to help customers and even if you can’t, leave them with the feeling that you did everything you could for them. This is key to making your business stand out from the competitors Going that extra mile to help someone is the key to good customer service.   6. Service received ● When I was looking for a wedding outfit, I went to one store where the clerk was brilliant and helped me find just the right dress without spending more than I had. She made me feel like I was wearing a high fashion, super expensive outfit and helped me pick accessories as well as where to get the best deals on the other items I needed. This changed my idea of what good customer service was Good customer service starts when you walk in the door. A smiling, friendly person greeting me when I’m looking around a shop always starts a good impression. Of course, what they do to help after that also makes a big difference! ●

  7. Other tips As well as thinking about what good customer service is, also think about the kind of skills that are key to working in a service environment.
