  1. Reconfigurable Optical Mesh and Network Intelligence Nazar Neayem Alcatel-Lucent Internet 2 - Summer 2007 Joint Techs Workshop Fermilab - Batavia, IL July 15-18, 2007.

  2. ROADM Rings Interconnect Full Mesh Network Static Architecture ROADM Rings 2 Degree 4 Degree Wavelengths Switched Virtual Rings 3 Degree Limited Mesh Network Architecture Evolution • Legacy deployment are based on Ring topology or non-DWDM • Multi layers with different traffic applications • Mesh traffic within the ring • Inter ring traffic is re-generated on the optical layer • Inter ring traffic is generated on layer 2/3

  3. Migrating from Static to ROADM to WSS Mesh • Flexibility to support required migration • Short time ROI or pay as you grow • With installed equipment reuse • From Static  ROADM • Eliminate stranded bandwidth • Accelerate service provisioning • Eliminate traffic disruption • Support real-time optical monitoring • ROADM WSS • Additional Mesh Flexibility • Colorless ports

  4. Adaptive and Agile Network • Network is continuous evolving • New Applications – VOD, IPTV, Content delivery • New Market Segments • Open and integrated transport interfaces • Routers and switches are having more layer one features • DWDM SFPs are becoming more and more sophisticated • Enhance fault isolation to Layer 1 and L2/3 network • New transport Rates – 40G and 100 G • Networks have to adapt to the early technology from early stage specifications to mature technology Layer 02/3 Layer 0/1 Tighter L1 and L2/3 Network Management

  5. Planning the Mesh Network Plan • Upgrading Nodes • Adding and deleting sites • Wavelengths planning • Wavelength blocking and reuse • Mesh Protection • path or span level WSS protection plans • Circuit verification: • Power, OSNR and dispersion • Since the networks are continuously evolving, active planning the physical layer and circuit growth is essential for network optimization Manages the lifecycle of network design

  6. Planning Tool Planning output file NMS Commissioning Report Network Intelligence –Deployment Deploy • Manual commissioning Mesh network is not easy • Active comparison between design fiber characteristics and actual measurements • Transient Control • One amplifier output power setting or changes will affect other directions amplifiers • Network-wide automatic power equalization • Manual equalization becoming extremely difficult • Interconnecting WSS ports will affect the thru traffic in other part of the network DWDM Fully Automated Commissioning Hides the Complexity and Guarantees optimal Network Performance

  7. D G F E Network Intelligence – Mesh Circuit Provision • Minimize number of steps to provision a service • Planning Tool pre-provisioning circuit validation • Protection and restoration schemes validation • Unique service per service identity • DWDM Color collision A B C

  8. Network Management Integrated Intelligence Distances, Attenuation (BOL/EOL), CD, Fiber type Network Topology Traffic matrix Plan Automatic Design Tool Network Commissioning file Port Connectivity Traffic Connectivity Design BOM NE Build-up IP adresses, proper SW load NE Commissioning NMS (in the field) (in the field) NE discovery Transponder Wiring (+Trouble shooting) Power Commissioning Add Service Manage Power balancing SERVICE COMMISSIONING THRU-PATH COMMISSIONING Network Element Deploy

  9. Conclusion • Optical Layer is migrating from ROADM rings to all optical mesh powered by the Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) • New applications driving continual growth and different traffic patterns, and higher bit-rates on links • Network Convergence Combined with L3 alien DWDM interfaces • Active and pro-active network awareness driving new techniques for directly monitoring DWDM networks • As network growing in size and complexity, network intelligence is hiding the complexity As Optical Networks Migrating into Mesh Network Intelligence is Becoming more Essential
