BASE ALIGNMENTS –DEFENSIVE LINE • DL always align Head-Up • NG is in a 0 tech • DEs are playing a 5 tech • 4 words – BASE, PINCH, SLANT, SMASH • BASE = NG runs Smash technique and DEs attack C gap • PINCH = NG runs a Smash technique and DEs attack B gap • SLANT = All DL attack the gap to the call (Green or Gold, Ringo or Lucy) • SMASH = All DL attack the middle of the offensive lineman

BASE ALIGNMENT – OLB / SS • BANDIT = Run strength – DL/LB • SPUR = Pass strength – DB/LB • Alignment vs TE = 0 x 2 • Alignment vs 1WR = 4 X 4 • Alignment vs 2WR = Split Rule • Alignment vs 3WR = Load Call • Run Fits • Any Flow Away = Check Cutback/Boot/Reverse • Fast Flow To = Cut It Off • Angle Flow To = Blow It Up

PRACTICING RUN FITS • We find time to practice our run fits on barrels every practice • The key is to get plenty of reps; we can get a group 10 reps in about 2 minutes • MLB – Mirrors Fullback • ILB / OLB – Read track of the deepest back flow (Hard, Fast, Angle, Away) • Hard = Iso Fast = Sweep Angle = Power

  13. Terminology • AX, BANG, CHOP = Gap Blitzes • COVER 3 (dog?) = 3 deep zone • COVER 11 (cowboy?) = Man with 1 free • COVER 12 (month?) = Man with 2 free • READ (book?) = Pattern Read #2

Blitzing Techniques • We identify our blitz technique with 4 terms: Inside or Outside & Level 1 or Level 2 • An Inside blitz is any blitz that attacks a gap between two offensive players • An Outside blitz is any blitz that attacks a gap with only one side is protected by an offensive player • Level 1 tells the blitzer to attack at a flat angle and “Run the Heel Line”. He has no contain responsibility. • Level 2 tells the blitzer to attack the “Hip of the Deepest Back”. He has contain responsibility.

  15. Cover 3 Basics • CBs/FS – Nobody gets deep! • SPUR/ BANDIT – Width before depth • SLB/ WLB – Wall Technique • MLB – Draw/Screen, then Low Hole • If SAM or WILL are blitzing, MIKE takes their Wall Technique • If both SAM & WILL are blitzing, MIKE is Low Hole right now
