Context: • IPE Project jointly planned and funded by the University & SHA; • First year and final year, 15 credit modules; • Multidisciplinary staff team; • 800 students: 8 professions • dieticians; midwives; nurses; paramedics, pharmacists; physiotherapists; radiographers and radiotherapists;

First semester studies; All sessions prior to first practice placement; Six sessions in rotation Lead session to 128 students 24 multidisciplinary groups of 32 students; Interactive groupwork in four sub-groups of 8; Blended Learning through StudyNet; First Year Module: Core Knowledge and Values for Professional Practice

First Year Module: Core Knowledge and Values for Professional Practice Three sessions have a direct ethical focus: • Introduction to Healthcare Ethics • a.p.birtles@herts.ac.uk • Consent and refusal of treatment • j.pearson@herts.ac.uk • Professional Roles (Confidentiality) • j.6.smith@herts.ac.uk

Learning outcomes: Describe fundamental ethical and professional conduct issues that confront health care professionals Apply ethical and professional conduct issues to practice scenarios Assessment method – Unseen examination First Year Module: Core Knowledge and Values for Professional Practice

Module delivered in 2, one week blocks First Cohort of 3rd year students Total numbers for semester A: 460 students Full Conference style arrangements & delivery with keynote sessions involving some ‘quality’ guest speakers ‘State of the art’ de Havilland conference centre booked for the event Third Year Module: Interprofessional Working in Health and Social Care

  8. Overall Theme: Teamworking - Entrepreneurship - Employability Conference Content

  9. Four Topics: 1) Leadership & Management of Change 2) Clinical Governance 3) Modernisation & New Ways of Working 4) Ethical/Legal Issues Delivery mode was varied - including lectures, addresses and service user reflection Ethics - a discussion panel of four with invited guest speakers: MEP, Trust Manager, two Senior Lecturers from our team Conference Content

  10. Remit: Current Ethico-Legal Debate in Health Care Discussion topic: ‘Health Tourism’ Two statements about Health Tourism & two questions for each statement Module team members on the panel supported a number of arguments with relevant theory around ethical principles Ethics Content

  11. Groups of eight students given detailed guidance on preparing to facilitate four ethics committees - others in the class forming members Others in the class only given the scenario Ethics group members feedback to the whole class the thoughts, discussion and recommendations of their team Workshops

  12. To set up and examine a new service provision in relation to ethical/legal considerations A team presentation - 30% An individual reflective essay: discussing the processes involved in team working - 70% Assessment
