  2. His youth • born on the 28th of June 1491 at Greenwich • the second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York • succeeded to the throneon the 22nd of April 1509 after his father´s and brother´s death • He was 18 years old • Married his brother‘s widow Catherine of Aragon

  3. His youth • Not interested in politics at first • Loved:hunting, hawking, archery, wrestling, tennis, jousting, horseriding

  4. His wars against France • Captured Thérouanne and Tournai(northern France) in 1513 • Spent 1 million pounds on this action • Next invasion: in 1523 • Failed because of hard frosts and very bad weather

  5. His break with Rome • He wanted to divorce with Catherine of Aragon(she didn´t give him son) • The pope didn´t agree • Henry created his own church-the Church of England • he proclaimed himself 'the only supreme head on earth of the Church of England'

  12. Katherine Parr • Twice widowed • an excellent nurse –she took care of Henry • Outlived Henry=>survived

  13. His eating habits • His lifestyle began to go wrong from the age of forty-four • His horse rolled on him in a tournament, hurting one leg and leaving him a chronic invalid • He had an ulcer(vřed) on his leg • during his last years he measured four and half feet round the waist

  14. Table manners Duties: • don´t put your fingers in your ears • don´t put your hands on your head • don´t blow your nose with your hands, use handkerchief-then don´t look in it

  15. Food • His court was able to eat during one day: • 11 heads of cattle(dobytče), 6 sheep, 17 pigs, 540 chickens, 15 swans, 6 cranes(jeřáb), 380 pigeons, 650 sky larks(skřivan), 17 geese, 4 peacocks(páv)

  16. His appearance and character • When he was young, he was a superb athlete=>very handsome • His fingers were full of jewelled rings, around his neck he wore a gold collar from which hung a diamond as big as a walnut. • His clothes were magnificent-made from silks, cloth of gold, satins, coloured feathers and jewells and precious metals • But he was egotistical, and ambitious for money and power

  17. His last days • He could hardly walk or stand • became paranoid in his final years-trusted no one • Died on January 28, 1547 • He was 56 years old • The cause of his death remains unknown-He possibly suffered a thrombosis in his leg or coronary heart failure • Buried in Windsor Castle next to Jane Seymour
