The King’s Great Matter Why I should get divorced • I need a son. • That Anne Boleyn girl is FIIIINNNE • My marriage is cursed • Did I mention that Anne Boleyn girl? • After 24 years of Marriage and no male heir, Henry began to believe the Marriage was cursed by God. • Clamed that Catherine had consummated her marriage with Arthur • Leviticus 20:21 "'If a man marries his brother's wife, it is an act of impurity; he has dishonored his brother. They will be childless.” • Henry appealed directly to the Pope asking that the marriage be annulled • The Pope denies his request

The King’s Great Matter • Excommunicated from the Catholic Church • Establishes Anglican Church • Church of England • Increases the power of Parliament • Parliament meet for seven years • Law of Succession- The King Decides who will succeed him. • Law of Supremacy- King is named the head of the Church

  5. 2 Anne Boleyn • Queen 1533-1536 • Age 32 • 1 Daughter (Elizabeth 1); 1 Miscarriage • Charged with Adultery, Incest, and Treason • Beheaded – May 19, 1536

  6. 3 Jane Seymour • Queen 1536-1537 • Age 28 • 1 Son (Edward VI) • She died of postnatal complications less than two weeks after the birth • Only of Henry’s wives to be buried by his side.

  7. 4 Anne of Cleves • Queen from January 6 1540 to July 9 1540. • Age 25 • German Noble • The marriage was never consummated. • “King's Beloved Sister” • Divorced The couple's first night as husband and wife was not a happy one. Henry confided to Cromwell that he had not consummated the marriage, saying, "I liked her before not well, but now I like her much worse".

  8. 5 Catherine Howard • Queen 1540-1542 • Age 17 • Almost immediately upon her marriage she began romance with Thomas Culpepper, a member of Henry’s court • Beheaded

  9. 6 Catherine Parr • 1543-1547 • Age 31 • Acted as a caretaker for Henry • Convinced Henry to accept Mary and Elizabeth back into his grace • Survived

  10. Edward VI • King 1547-1553 • Edward was only 10 years old when he became King of England. • During Edward’s short rule the parliament enacted laws expanding the Reformation in England. • Act of Uniformity (imposed a Book of Common Prayer on all parishes)

Mary I (Tudor) • Reign 1553-1558 • Bloody Mary • Mary was a Catholic who wanted to restore England to Roman Catholicism. • In her efforts she had more than 300 Protestants burned as heretics. • As a result of her policies, England was even more Protestant by the end of her reign than it had been at the beginning. • Sets the precedent for female rule in England
