  1. Calibration of Scanning and Profiling Radars for HMT-SCWA 14-17 March 2012 Event

  2. Overview • Scanning radars: • KPIX (C-band on Mt. Vaca) • KDAX (S-band near Davis) • KMUX (S-band on Mt. Umunhum) • Profiling radars: • DVS (SPROF near Davis) • STR (SPROF near Santa Rosa • Raingauge and Disdrometer • DVS (Tipping bucket and old model PARSIVEL colocated with SPROF) • New model PARSIVELs at DVS and STR produced questionable data

  3. Precipitation on the surface at DVSOld PARSIVEL

  4. Precipitation on the surface at DVSNew PARSIVEL

  5. DVS SPROF Reflectivity

  6. STR SPROF Reflectivity

  7. KPIX 0.5o Reflectivity

  8. KDAX 0.5o Reflectivity

  9. KDAX 0.9o Reflectivity

  10. KDAX 1.3o Reflectivity

  11. KMUX 0.5o Reflectivity

  12. DVS Reflectivity: PARSIVEL and SPROF Gate 1 DVS SPROF Reflectivity ~7.7 dBZ low relative to DVS PARSIVEL (Old) Reflectivity

  13. Scanning Radar Beam Heights over DVS and STR

  14. Reflectivity over DVS:KDAX 1.3o and SPROF1 DVS SPROF1 Reflectivity ~4.6 dBZ low relative to KDAX 1.3o Reflectivity 1Gaussian Weighted Mean over 0.29-0.59 km

  15. Reflectivity over STR:KDAX 0.9o and SPROF1 STR SPROF1 Reflectivity ~5.4 dBZ low relative to KDAX 0.9o Reflectivity 1Gaussian Weighted Mean over 1.30-2.92 km

  16. Reflectivity over DVS:KMUX 0.5o and SPROF1 DVS SPROF1 Reflectivity ~8.0 dBZ low relative to KMUX 0.5o Reflectivity 1Gaussian Weighted Mean over 2.60-5.22 km

  17. Reflectivity over STR:KMUX 0.5o and SPROF1 STR SPROF1 Reflectivity ~8.0 dBZ low relative to KMUX 0.5o Reflectivity 1Gaussian Weighted Mean over 2.85-5.67 km

  18. Reflectivity over DVS:KPIX 0.5o and SPROF1 DVS SPROF1 Reflectivity ~6.1 dBZ low relative to KPIX 0.5o Reflectivity 1Gaussian Weighted Mean over 0.94-1.42 km

  19. Reflectivity over STR:KPIX 0.5o and SPROF1 STR SPROF1 Reflectivity ~5.2 dBZ low relative to KPIX 0.5o Reflectivity 1Gaussian Weighted Mean over 1.13-2.17 km

  20. Relative Calibration Summary • If DVS PARSIVEL (Old) is the reference: • DVS SPROF is ~7.7 dBZ too LOW • KDAX is ~3.1 dBZ too LOW (DVS SPROF as intermediate reference) • KMUX is ~0.3 dBZ too HIGH (DVS SPROF as intermediate reference) • KPIX is ~1.6 dBZ too LOW (DVS SPROF as intermediate reference) • STR SPROF is ~7.7 dBZ too LOW (DVS SPROF as intermediate reference and KDAX, KMUX and KPIX as next intermediate references)

  21. Relative Calibration Summary • If KDAX is the reference: • DVS SPROF is ~4.6 dBZ too LOW • STR SPROF is ~5.4 dBZ too LOW • KMUX is ~3.0 dBZ too HIGH (Mean of DVS and STR SPROF intermediate references) • KPIX is ~0.7 dBZ too HIGH (Mean of DVS and STR SPROF intermediate references)

  22. Relative Calibration Summary • If KMUX is the reference: • DVS SPROF is ~8.0 dBZ too LOW • STR SPROF is ~8.0 dBZ too LOW • KDAX is ~3.0 dBZ too LOW (Mean of DVS and STR SPROF intermediate references) • KPIX is ~2.4 dBZ too LOW (Mean of DVS and STR SPROF intermediate references)
