  1. Mixtures

  2. A mixture is defined as two or more substances when mixed together, keep their physical properties such as; color, texture, mass, volume, and density. They can also be separated into their individual parts.

  3. These are some examples of mixtures. In each picture, you can still see the individual parts that make up the whole. Apples are still apples when they are mixed with watermelon. M & M’s are still candies even though they are mixed with nuts. Pretzels are still pretzels with their unique shape even though they are mixed with chex and nuts.

  4. Not all mixtures are made up of two solids mixed together. Some mixtures can be a liquid and a solid, such as water and sand. Other mixtures can be two or more liquids. Oil and water do not mix evenly together. One is more dense than the other and forms a mixture that can be separated.

  5. Solutions Salt water is a special mixture. When salt is mixed into water, we no longer see its physical properties. Salt mixes EVENLY into the water. Salt dissolves evenly into the water and can no longer be seen or easily taken out. We call this type of mixture a SOLUTION. http://www.aqob.com.au

  6. 3 kinds of solutions Solutions www.science-sparks.com There are 3 kinds of mixtures in this picture. Two are special mixtures called solutions. The other is a mixture by definition. Can you tell which is which? Can these mixtures be separated? The sand and water mixture can be separated by pouring it through a filter. The sugar and salt mixtures are solutions – the sugar and salt dissolveevenly into the water. We can allow the sun’s thermal energy to EVAPORATE the water and the sugar and salt will be left behind.
