  1. Mixtures Unit 1 Topic 6

  2. Types of mixtures • A mixture contains two or more substances occupying the same space but are not chemically combined. • When the substances areevenly distributed throughout the mixture it is called homogeneous. • When the substances areunevenly distributed throughout the mixture it is called heterogeneous.

  3. Homogeneous • Homogeneous mixtures have an even distribution of their particles. • This means that every partof the mixture has the same proportions of each particle. • Solutionsarehomogeneous. • The particles in a solution are very small and evenly mixed so you cannot see the separate parts (it does not look like a mixture).

  4. Example • Kool-aid, when mixed by the directions, completely dissolves. The sugar and flavor particles dissolve evenlythroughout the water. If you make a pitcher of Kool-aid and pour your friends a glass, each glass will have the same color, taste and composition.

  5. Example • Ex 2: ____________ is a mixture whose main components are nitrogen, N2, oxygen O2 and carbon dioxide CO2. Each sample of air collected would have the same % of each gas molecule.

  6. Heterogeneous • Heterogeneous mixtures have an uneven distribution of their particles. • This means that every partof the mixture has somewhat different proportions of each particle. • The different components of the mixture are easily seen because they are larger and unevenly mixed.

  7. Example • Ex 1: Chocolate chip cookiedough is a heterogeneous mixture. If you make cookies all of the same size, then analyze the number of chocolate chips in each cookie, not all of the cookies would have the same number of chips.

  8. Ex 2: Salad dressing (Italian) even after mixing, the oil and spices are unevenlymixed and you can easily see the separate components. If you let the mixture set, then the components easily begin to separate with the oil going to the top and the spicessettling to the bottom.

  9. Practice • Under today’s warm up – complete Bookwork Topic 6.1 • Read pg 26 and Do pg 28 problem #8
