  3. What Year Was It Built In? • The Maritime Museum wasbuilt in 2002.

  5. The Materials • Timber structure • Composite aluminium sandwich panels • Lining the roof are 6.0mm BGC DuralinerTM Fibre Cement Sheets • Eight kilometres of joints • 45,000 screws • 4,000 metres of seamless waterproof system.3

  6. Buildings Being Built In Fremantle Around 2002 • in 2000 Booyeembara Park was established on the former Montreal Open space. • in 2001 the Whalers tunnel was renovated and reopended to the public. • in 2005 John Curtin Statue was unveiled in Kings Square.

  7. Events in Fremantle in 2002 • Woodside Maternity hospital closed. • Mummy and Daddy were having Dinner with Richard Ford (a friend from USA) at Sails Restaurant while I slept in the pram. • Fremantle hosted the International 505 World Championships.

  10. What Year Was It Made In? • The Port Authority Building was built in 1963 by Hobbs Winning and Leighton. • It was built to accommodate the then Fremantle Port Authority's existing staff in one building instead of the pre-existing eight buildings around the wharf area.

Materials used • Foundations:120 'Franki' piles • Lighting: controlled natural lighting from the north and south • Windows are anodised aluminium frames glazed with anti-glare glass and are completely reversible, allowing all window cleaning to be carried out from within the building. • Tiling: tiling for both exterior wall finish and interior wall decoration Exterior tiling gives a permanent sparkling effect, and reduces maintenance to a minimum • Ground floor roof: It is a folded roof pattern of pre-stressed concrete units in two spans each of 20 metres.

Why Was It Constructed? • Its construction resulted from Federation – when the Commonwealth took over responsibility for customs and excise. • It was the first purpose built customs building in Fremantle and functioned as the main branch of the Customs Department of Western Australia from this time.

  21. The Materials • Wall - red brick, and stone (Donnybrook Sandstone). • Roof - metal Corrugated Iron.

What Was Happening in Fremantle at that Time? • The Fremantle Municipal tramways network began operations in 1905 and expanded into North Fremantle in 1908. • The Premier was Newton Moore. • The Australian Coat of arms was officially accepted. • In 1900 motor cars were frail and bulky and similar in design to horse drawn carriages.

  27. Why was it Constructed? • To store goods & chattels • In 1977 the government department vacated the building and the Public works converted it into a museum that was opened in 1979 by Sir Charles Court.

How was it Constructed? • It was constructed with convict labour, and some subcontractors. • Constructed from brick,limestone and jarrah. • The limestone mortar was repaired in 1979 with concrete, but is now causing damage to the limestone and so the replaced mortar is now itself being replaced with lime mortar.
