  7. Examples from East Bay • Strengthening and extending of STEM education pipeline • Stoppage of leakages • Bonding of essential components • Strategic planning based on the big picture

  8. Foundational Science Certificates A model for the preparation and professional development of elementary and middle school teachers in California to strengthen science instruction and application of STEM principles

  9. Process - Outcomes • Courses in content knowledge and method – upskill teachers to increase science teaching effectiveness, confidence, and instruction time • Involvement of STEM practitioners – develop project-based problem solving learning and relate mathematics and science to real-life applications in engineering and technology • Preparation for CSET I and II – earn Foundational General Science Credential • Partnering with Foundation Mathematics Certificate – facilitate coordinated mathematics and science enhancement

  10. Community College Transfer ProjectGoals • Increase the number of students seeking science and mathematics single subject teaching career • Strengthen pipeline with community colleges and stop leakage • Build better coordination with community colleges in recruitment and advisement • Develop joint efforts to reach out to high school students

  11. Process - Outcomes • Articulation - develop course patterns and academic criteria for transfer students • Advising - establish a joint academic and financial aid advising system for community college students • Faculty Dialogue – CSUEB and CC math and science faculty discuss course content and successful pedagogical techniques • Affiliates Program - students at CSUEB and partner community colleges are paid to tutor in local high schools

  12. Noyce and MSTI ProgramsAddressing the Big Picture • Strengthen overall effort in increasing single/multiple subject mathematics and science teachers on all levels • Provide financial and academic support to students • Provide professional development to pre- and in-service teachers • Monitor the big picture and identify areas of need
