Definition of Custom. A custom is a ritual, belief or object passed down within a society, still maintained in the present, with origins in the past. In other word it’s called tradition. Definition of Taboos.

  1. Definition of Custom • A custom is a ritual, belief or object passed down within a society, still maintained in the present, with origins in the past. In other word it’s called tradition.

  2. Definition of Taboos • A taboo is a strong social prohibition (or ban) relating to any area of human activity or social custom that is sacred and/or forbidden based on moral judgment, religious beliefs and or scientific consensus.

  3. Taboos Marriage • Brides and grooms are not encouraged to attend the funeral for three months before and after the marriage. • Furnishings in the marriage is not encouraged to use white, blue, black and green. • In the future bridal bedroom, beds, tables and cabinets should be placed in the normal position and not the corner of the room. • Even numbers are often used in weddings. According to Chinese belief, the marriage does not follow the protocol specified is an invalid marriage.

Chinese New Year • The Chinese believe that they can not sweep the house at the first festival day just because it can remove all gain or "ong" available. • In addition, the Chinese also believe that they will suffer if the dishes used on the day of the celebration was broken. So, they will always be careful when doing homework. • Words that are not polite and not encouraged to mean bad New Year celebrations for Chinese. Such as, the word death, ghosts, or talk dirty during festival. Chinese believe that this will bring bad luck throughout the year. • Chinese people avoid wearing black when celebrating a festival in assuming thatcolor will bring bad luck for the Chinese.

During Pregnancy • Do not eat rabbit meatIf you eat, the baby is born will have a lip in rabbits. • Do not eat dog meat.If you eat, the baby  will like to bite people, especially when the time of breastfeeding. • Do not eat crab.Then the baby does not keep producing saliva. • Do not eat foods that are cold like ice-cream, watermelon.Likelihood lead to miscarriages.

Do not take nail clippers or tweezersBabies born will have a disability. • Do not raise hands above shoulder level.Mother is not easy to balance herself. • Do not hanging clothes.Supposedly will lead to miscarriages. • Do not attend the wedding ceremony.The wedding ceremony will influence the mother's emotions, and affect the baby indirectly.

Chinese new year • Cleaning house before CNY • Say ”Gong Xi Fa Chai ”--- • ‘Congrats you become rich’ • Eat new year cake / “kuihbakul”------- (“niangao”) • Gao---maksudtinggi ( increment of salary, “naikpangkat”) • “ chineseoren”….represent gold • After 1-14 days, the 15th day called as “yuanxiao”

  10. Qing Ming Festival • clean the graves of ancestors • Respect to ancestors

  11. Chinese festival: • Dragon boat Festival (5 May) • To remember ”Qu Yuan”---a minister of Chu in the Warring States period
