  1. II Kings 10

  2. II Kings 10

  3. The Challenge Begins • (2 Ki 10:1 NKJV) Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote and sent letters to Samaria, to the rulers of Jezreel, to the elders, and to those who reared Ahab's sons, saying:

  4. Samaria Samaria

  5. Setting the Stage • (2 Ki 10:2 NKJV) Now as soon as this letter comes to you, since your master's sons are with you, and you have chariots and horses, a fortified city also, and weapons,

  6. The Challenge • (2 Ki 10:3 NKJV) choose the best qualified of your master's sons, set him on his father's throne, and fight for your master's house.

  7. The Battle is Anticipated • (2 Ki 10:4 NKJV) But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, "Look, two kings could not stand up to him; how then can we stand?" • Two kings - literally, “the two kings,” i. e., Jehoram and Ahaziah 2Ki_9:21-28. -- Albert Barnes

  8. The letter had the desired result • This ruse had the desired result. The recipients of the letter were in great fear, and said, Two kings could not stand before him, how shall we? and sent messengers to announce their submission, and to say that they were willing to carry out his commands, and had no desire to appoint a king. -- Keil - Delitzsch

  9. We surrender! • (2 Ki 10:5 NKJV) And he who was in charge of the house, and he who was in charge of the city, the elders also, and those who reared the sons, sent to Jehu, saying, "We are your servants, we will do all you tell us; but we will not make anyone king. Do what is good in your sight."

  10. The Demand • (2 Ki 10:6 NKJV) Then he wrote a second letter to them, saying: If you are for me and will obey my voice, take the heads of the men, your master's sons, and come to me at Jezreel by this time tomorrow. Now the king's sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who were rearing them.

  11. They killed them! • (2 Ki 10:7 NKJV) So it was, when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons and slaughtered seventy persons, put their heads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel.

  12. Slaughter is met with no emotion • (2 Ki 10:8 NKJV) Then a messenger came and told him, saying, "They have brought the heads of the king's sons." And he said, "Lay them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning."

  13. The Case has been decided “Lay ye them in two heaps” - It appears that the heads of these princes had arrived at Jezreel in the night time: Jehu ordered them to be left at the gate of the city, a place of public resort, that all the people might see them, and be struck with terror, and conclude that all resistance to such authority and power would be vain. -- Adam Clarke

  14. Who killed all these? • (2 Ki 10:9 NKJV) So it was, in the morning, that he went out and stood, and said to all the people, "You are righteous. Indeed I conspired against my master and killed him; but who killed all these?

  15. The Lord will do what He says • (2 Ki 10:10 NKJV) "Know now that nothing shall fall to the earth of the word of the LORD which the LORD spoke concerning the house of Ahab; for the LORD has done what He spoke by His servant Elijah."

  16. What did Elijah say? • (1 Ki 21:17-29 NKJV) Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, {18} "Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who lives in Samaria. There he is, in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone down to take possession of it. {19} "You shall speak to him, saying, 'Thus says the LORD: "Have you murdered and also taken possession?"

  17. What did Elijah say? • (1 Ki 21:17-29 NKJV) {19} ' And you shall speak to him, saying, 'Thus says the LORD: "In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs shall lick your blood, even yours."' " {20} So Ahab said to Elijah, "Have you found me, O my enemy?" And he answered, "I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the LORD:

  18. What did Elijah say? • (1 Ki 21:17-29 NKJV) {21} 'Behold, I will bring calamity on you. I will take away your posterity, and will cut off from Ahab every male in Israel, both bond and free. {22} 'I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, because of the provocation with which you have provoked Me to anger, and made Israel sin.’

  19. What did Elijah say? • (1 Ki 21:17-29 NKJV) {23} "And concerning Jezebel the LORD also spoke, saying, 'The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.' {24} "The dogs shall eat whoever belongs to Ahab and dies in the city, and the birds of the air shall eat whoever dies in the field." {25} But there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the LORD, because Jezebel his wife stirred him up.

  20. What did Elijah say? • (1 Ki 21:17-29 NKJV {26} And he behaved very abominably in following idols, according to all that the Amorites had done, whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel. {27} So it was, when Ahab heard those words, that he tore his clothes and put sackcloth on his body, and fasted and lay in sackcloth, and went about mourning.

  21. What did Elijah say? • (1 Ki 21:17-29 NKJV {28} And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, {29} "See how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the calamity in his days. In the days of his son I will bring the calamity on his house."

  22. Back to II Kings 10 • (2 Ki 10:11 NKJV) So Jehu killed all who remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men and his close acquaintances and his priests, until he left him none remaining.

  23. Going to Samaria • (2 Ki 10:12 NKJV) And he arose and departed and went to Samaria. On the way, at Beth Eked of the Shepherds,

  24. Jezreel to Samaria.

  25. "We are the brothers of Ahaziah” • (2 Ki 10:13 NKJV) Jehu met with the brothers of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, "Who are you?" So they answered, "We are the brothers of Ahaziah; we have come down to greet the sons of the king and the sons of the queen mother."

  26. 2Ki 10:13 -- Albert Barnes • The brethren of Ahaziah - Not the actual brothers of Ahaziah, who had all been slain by the Arabs before his accession to the throne 2Ch_21:17; 2Ch_22:1; but his nephews, the sons of his brothers (marginal reference). It is remarkable that they should have penetrated so far into the kingdom of Israel without having heard of the revolution. -- Albert Barnes (cont)

  27. 2Ki 10:13 -- Albert Barnes • The children of the king ... - i. e.” the sons of Jehoram, and the children (sons and grandsons) of the queen-mother, Jezebel.” Some of both may well have been at Jezreel, though the younger branches of the royal family were at Samaria 2Ki_10:1. -- Albert Barnes

  28. Wiping out the house of Ahab • (2 Ki 10:14 NKJV) And he said, "Take them alive!" So they took them alive, and killed them at the well of Beth Eked, forty-two men;and he left none of them.

  29. Jehu meets Jehonadab • (2 Ki 10:15 NKJV) Now when he departed from there, he met Jehonadab the son of Rechab, coming to meet him; and he greeted him and said to him, "Is your heart right, as my heart is toward your heart?" And Jehonadab answered, "It is." Jehu said, "If it is, give me your hand."So he gave him his hand, and he took him up to him into the chariot.

  30. Jehonadab • Jehonadab belonged to the tribe of the Kenites, one of the most ancient in Palestine Gen_15:19. Their origin is unknown, but their habits were certainly those of Arabs. Owing to their connection with Moses, they formed a friendship with the Israelites, accompanied them in their wanderings, and finally receivcd a location in the wilderness of Judah Jdg_1:16. The character of this chief, Jonadab, is best seen in the rule which he established for his descendants Jer_35:6-7 -- Albert Barnes

  31. The purge of Ahab continues • (2 Ki 10:16-17 NKJV) Then he said, "Come with me, and see my zeal for the LORD." So they had him ride in his chariot. {17} And when he came to Samaria, he killed all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed them, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke to Elijah.

  32. Destroying the Baal Worshippers • (2 Ki 10:18-19 NKJV) Then Jehu gathered all the people together, and said to them, "Ahab served Baal a little, Jehu will serve him much. {19} "Now therefore, call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests. Let no one be missing, for I have a great sacrifice for Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live." But Jehu acted deceptively, with the intent of destroying the worshipers of Baal.

  33. The Assembly for Baal • (2 Ki 10:20-21 NKJV) And Jehu said, "Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal." So they proclaimed it. {21} Then Jehu sent throughout all Israel; and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left who did not come. So they came into the temple of Baal, and the temple of Baal was full from one end to the other.

  34. For Baal or God? • (2 Ki 10:22-23 NKJV) And he said to the one in charge of the wardrobe, "Bring out vestments for all the worshipers of Baal." So he brought out vestments for them. {23} Then Jehu and Jehonadab the son of Rechab went into the temple of Baal, and said to the worshipers of Baal, "Search and see that no servants of the LORD are here with you, but only the worshipers of Baal."

  35. No one is to get away • (2 Ki 10:24 NKJV) So they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had appointed for himself eighty men on the outside, and had said, "If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escapes, whoever lets him escape, it shall be his life for the life of the other."

  36. Baal Worshippers are killed • (2 Ki 10:25 NKJV) Now it happened, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, "Go in and kill them; let no one come out!" And they killed them with the edge of the sword; then the guards and the officers threw them out, and went into the inner room of the temple of Baal.

  37. The temple of Baal burned • (2 Ki 10:26-28 NKJV) And they brought the sacred pillars out of the temple of Baal and burned them. {27} Then they broke down the sacred pillar of Baal, and tore down the temple of Baal and made it a refuse dump to this day. {28} Thus Jehu destroyed Baal from Israel.

  38. Jehu: Good and bad • (2 Ki 10:29-30 NKJV) However Jehu did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin, that is, from the golden calves that were at Bethel and Dan. {30} And the LORD said to Jehu, "Because you have done well in doing what is right in My sight, and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in My heart, your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation."

  39. Jehu didn’t listen • (2 Ki 10:31 NKJV) But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart; for he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam, who had made Israel sin.

  40. Israel begins to go down in size • (2 Ki 10:32 NKJV) In those days the LORD began to cut off parts of Israel; and Hazael conquered them in all the territory of Israel

  41. The Territory that is lost • (2 Ki 10:33 NKJV) from the Jordan eastward: all the land of Gilead; Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh; from Aroer, which is by the River Arnon, including Gilead and Bashan.

  42. Gilead; Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh

  43. Gilead; Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh

  44. The end of Jehu • (2 Ki 10:34 NKJV) Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

  45. The end of Jehu • (2 Ki 10:35-36 NKJV) So Jehu rested with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. Then Jehoahaz his son reigned in his place. {36} And the period that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.

  46. What Did We Learn?

  47. What Did We Learn? • Sincere Repentance means much, but doesn’t correct everything.

  48. What Did We Learn? • Sincere Repentance means much, but doesn’t correct everything. • Men can have many great qualities, and yet have serious flaws.

  49. What Did We Learn? • Sincere Repentance means much, but doesn’t correct everything. • Men can have many great qualities, and yet have serious flaws. • God begins to “charge” nations for serious spiritual flaws that just go on and on.
