  1. MOVEMENT AND CHANGE - a PHYSICS module

  2. SPEED

  3. SPEED • Defined as – • distance travelled in a certain time • s = d / t • Distance usually measured in metres; time in seconds; speed in metres per second

  4. SPEED • m / s • or in science more usually expressed as • m s-1

  5. SPEED • Tells us nothing about the direction travelled in • Is usually an “average” value (unless measured and recorded every second!)

  6. A journey – as a table

  7. A Journey • Present this journey as a distance time graph • Q1 What assumptions have you made in plotting this graph? • Q2 Describe the journey depicted on the graph with explanations of what happened in each part.

  8. A Journey • Q4 Use the gradient method to calculate the speed from 22 minutes to 25 minutes. • Q5 Use the gradient method to calculate the speed from 10 minutes until 16 minutes.

  9. Speed vs Velocity • Read p125 of the PHYSICS text. • Write a note to define and explain what VELOCITY is and how it has a different meaning to speed.
