1. The Revolutionary War By: Justin Mitchell

2. Why did the war start??? • The people in America were angry and did not like to pay high taxes to the King of England. • So they didn’t pay the taxes and the King of England responded by sending an army to America. • The colonists started to fight the soldiers of the English Army in 1775, so the Revolutionary War is born.

3. What happened at Lexington and Concord??? • The first shots starting the revolution were fired at Lexington, Massachusetts. • On April 18, 1775, British General Thomas Gage sent 700 soldiers to destroy guns and ammunition the colonists had stored in the town of Concord.

4. The Americans declare independence from Britain!!! • The colonists finally decided to break away from Britain. • The Declaration of Independence was officially declared in July 4, 1776.

5. Continental Army General George Washington • On June 15, 1775, Congress resolved that a general needs to be appointed to lead are defense of American Liberty. • Ballot were taken and George Washington was unanimously elected. British General William Howe • He came to the colonies on May 25, 1775, as a Major General. • When he arrived, he led the British troops in attacking Breed’s Hill. • He was the illegitimate uncle of King George III.

7. The Battle of Long Island, New York • Date- August 27, 1776 • Who won- The British drove the Americans from Brooklyn and forced them to leave New York. • Summary- On August 22, 1776 the British landed on Long Island. The British defeated the Americans and the British lost 63 killed and 337 wounded and missing. Although the Americans had 970 men killed, wound or missing, and 1,079 taken captive.

8. The Battle of Princeton and Trenton, New Jersey Princeton Date- January 3, 1777 Who won- The Americans outmaneuvered the British and escaped Cornwallis’ encircling move (…….the Americans won) Summary- From all the time in Trenton, Cornwallis finally arrived in Princeton, New Jersey with 8,00 troops. Washington knew they were going to attack and wanted to make a fight of it. Many more British soldiers were killed, injured, and captured than Americans. Trenton Date- December 16, 1776 Who won- The battle was a rich, substantial, and moral victory for Washington and his American troops. Summary- When Fort Lee was abandoned, Washington began to withdraw his army across New Jersey toward Philadelphia. About 5,000 Americans left Hackensack on November 21, 1776, and retired without problems, 100 miles to safety behind the Delaware River on December 7th.

9. The Battle of Saratoga, New York Date- October 17, 1777 Who won- The Americans forced the surrender of Burgoyne’s force. Summary- On October 7, 1777, General Burgoyne led hid army forward. On the previous day, Clinton had successfully executed a brilliant attempt against the two American forts which banned his progress up the Hudson River.

10. Benjamin Franklin • He helped stop the Stamp Act by telling the British that the Americans would never pay the taxes. • He joined the Continental Congress. • He helped write the Declaration of Independence.

11. Margaret Corbin • Fought alongside her husband in the Revolutionary War. • First women to receive pension from the United States government as a disabled soldier.

12. France and the Patriots form an alliance!!! • The Treaty of Alliance with France was signed on February 6, 1778. • The Americans will aid the French if war breaks out between France and Great Britain.

13. The winter at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania • The conditions in camp were terrible! • They were forced to live in damp, crowded, housing, Washington’s army of about 12,000 suffered from a lack of enough clothing and food. • About 2,00 died from diseases such as typhoid, dysentery, typhus, and pneumonia.

14. The Battle of Charleston, South Carolina • Date- March 29, 1780 • Who won- It was barely a fight between the British who took the Americans by surprise. • Summary- On March 10th, the British finally reached mainland. After a successful night crossing of the Ashley River, Clinton set out to cut off Charleston and Maj. General Benjamin Lincoln from support and silence its line of communication.

15. The Battle of Yorktown, Virginia • Date- October 9, 1781 • Who won- The Americans and French • Summary- It ended up being the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War. As a surrender of Cornwallis’s army encouraged the British government eventually to negotiate an end to the conflict.

16. The Treaty of Paris 1783 • The agreement officially ended the American Revolution. • The British received Quebec and the Ohio Valley. • The United States received new territory south of the Canadian border to double its size. • The United States also successfully received was important fishing rights in Canadian waters.
