2. Salutary Neglect I. What it Was: A. long-standing British policy towards its colonies in North America. Known as the Hands-off Policy II. How it Worked: A. England (Britain)did not strictly enforce parliamentary laws in the colonies. B. British government doesn’t pay a lot of attention to the colonies C. British government treated the colonists like 2nd class citizens of England D. Distance limited power of English government in the colonies.

3. Salutary Neglect III. Response of the 13 British Colonies: A. Colonies formed their own colonial governments i. Virginia House of Burgesses – formed in 1619 , first form of representative government in the colonies. B. Colonies governed themselves and made their own laws C. Colonies got used to governing them selves.

4. Salutary Neglect IV. Britain tries to regain control of its Colonies A. Parliament passes the Navigation Acts i. Attempt to force the colonists to trade only with England B. Parliament passes other acts (laws) after the French and Indian War. • Laws are meant to regain control of the colonies. • Colonist don’t like the new laws • Colonist begin to protest and rebel against the new laws

Outcome of Salutary Neglect: • Salutary neglect was a major contributing factor that led to the American Revolution • The Revolution was the Colonial fight to break away from the English government C. Prolonged colonial isolation from British rule resulted in a new identity separate from England. i. Colonist Viewed themselves as different from British people.
