  3. Some Random Facts • There are no polar bears at the South Pole • Dogs were banned in 1994 • It is a continent; dry, large and high • Holds records for highest wind speed and lowest temperature • Summer it is never dark, winter is never light • Average temp in December is around -27 degrees C.

  4. 100 Years Ago • Scott left Cape Evans on 1 November 1911 • Amundsen left Bay of Whales on 19 October 1911 and reached the Pole on 14 December 1911 • Scott reached the Pole 18th January 1912 • Oats spoke his last immortal words ‘I’m just going outside and may be some time’ on 16 March 1912 • Scott’s last diary entry was made 29 March 1912

The Antarctic Treaty • Treaty was first signed in 1959 • Original Signatories: South Africa, Belgium, Japan, USA, Norway, France, New Zealand, Russia, Argentina, Australia, Chile • Agreed that Antarctica is to be used for • peaceful purposes • the freedom for scientific research • international cooperation; and • preservation and conservation of living resources.

  7. Tourism Rules • Do not use guns or explosives • Do not bring non-native plants or animals • Do not expect rescue • Only one ship may visit a site at any one time • Vessels with more than 500 passengers shall not make landings • Maximum of 100 passengers may be ashore from a vessel at one time
