  2. WHAT IS IT? • A way to cool things using a magnetic material and a magnetic field • Has been going on for years to cool small volumes to near 0 K temperatures • Runs on MCE laws (magnetocaloric effect)

  3. MCE • Response of magnetic material to a changing magnetic field by change in temp. • Spinning of material lowers entropy • To compensate for spins, atoms in material vibrate, increasing the temp. • Reversing the process results in a lower temperature

  4. HOW TO APPLY TO A NORMAL USE REFRIGERATOR? • Only works at certain temperature ranges (near Curie) • Use of the right material (Gadolinium) • Ericsson Cycle (a plate rotating a magnetic field)

  5. BENEFITS OF MAGNETIC REFRIGERATION • Almost no energy would be required • Helps diminish greenhouse effect • Can reduce global warming impact if used massively • More expensive, but no extra cost afterwards.

  6. Lab • Testing different materials and see how effective they can be and mimic the current gas expansion - compression cycle. • Look at how the entropy of the material changes throughout this process • Determine which material would be the best fit for a house refrigerator.
