  3. What is Podcasting? • Term emerged in 2004 • Combine words “iPod” and “broadcasting” • Podcasts are recorded audio programs that people can subscribe to for free. Whenever new podcasts are posted online, those files can be automatically downloaded to a computer and transferred to a portable music player. • Morning commute, airplane, gym, travel to the ranch

Podcasting vs Broadcast Radio? • This is the age of new media • So much news consumed online • Radio is struggling for listenership • Stations across the country have been gobbled up by big media (Clear Channel) • Farm broadcasting is becoming obsolete in many U.S. markets • Podcasting is servicing hungry listeners for niche audio programming

Steps To Produce Podcast • Make an outline of what you will include in podcast • Record an audio file that contains a news report, commentary, etc. (Takes Practice!) • Input the ID3 tags (metadata that includes author, subject of .MP3 file). This is displayed when playing file in Apple’s iTunes or Windows Media Player Compress the file into .MP3 format • Post to the Web • Code RSS Feed (Key to distribution)

What the Heck is RSS? • RSS=“Really Simple Syndication” • Using free software clients, subscribe to RSS feed (URL) of podcast • Automatically receive downloaded podcast on desktop • Will play in iTunes, Windows Media Player, Telephones, whichever audio player you have chosen as default player

  13. RSS a form of eXtensible markup language (XML). Instead of hunting for these stories from Web site to Web site through a browser, a news reader program automatically aggregates headlines and news updates for you.
