  2. Quick Survey • Do you own or have access to an iPod or other MP3 device or a home computer? • Are you familiar with the term podcast and what it means? • Have you ever listened to a podcast? • Do you currently listen to/subscribe to at least one podcast on a regular basis?

  3. Podcasting? • What is it? • How do you find them? • How do you use them? • How do you create one?

  4. Defined • Download digital audio and video files. • Method of distributing multimedia files over the Internet using RSS syndication formats. • Easy to catalog and update. • Free! • 6.4 million have downloaded a podcast.

Understanding Syndication-RSS • Podcasting involves a set of rules known as RSS (Really Simple Syndication). • RSS allows podcast content to be syndicated instantly on the Web. • In 2004, the RSS format was combined with aggregator software to check RSS-enabled web pages for new audio content (Podcasts) and keep users up to date on content. • Users had the option to have that content delivered directly to their home computers, and ultimately, their digital media device or MP3 player.

Using iTunes Podcast Directory After iTunes is downloaded. . . • Launch iTunes and click the iTunes Store in the Source Panel. • Click Podcasts in the iTunes Store panel. • Note that there are podcasts in many genres and subject areas. • Select Education in the Categories panel. • Let’s narrow the category--K-12. • New and Notable Podcasts • Today’s Top Podcasts and Featured Podcasts. • Listing of episodes.

  11. Subscribing to a Podcast • When you subscribe, iTunes automatically downloads the latest episode. • In iTunes, click the Subscribe button on the Details page of the podcast.

Directions: Answer the following quesitons in a Google Docs document and share it with me. • Summarize the process used for creating a podcast. • Do you agree with the last statement in the NewsHour Extra article that says: “This is not a flash in the pan, it’s here to stay.” Why or Why not? • Do you think podvertising will be a good thing? Why or why not? • If given the opportunity, would you ever consider creating your own podcast or a podvertising campaign? Why or Why not? • What impact, if any, do you believe podcasting will have on education in the U.S.?
