    3. The Cherokee Treaty of Long Island: stated that the Cherokee gave up all lands east of the Blue Ridge Mountains and along the Watauga, Nolichucky, Upper Holston and New Rivers; signed by NC, VA and the Cherokee

Adopting the State Constitution Declaration of Rights: Freedom to worship Freedom to bear arms to defend the state Freedom to hold frequent elections Freedom to maintain a free press 3 branches of government Governor (elected by the General Assembly) Bicameral Legislature (elected by the people) Courts (elected by the General Assembly)

    5. 1st State Governor Richard Caswell: the president of the 5th Provincial Congress, became the 1st state governor

    6. New State Government Conservatives: feared that the new government would be too democratic Radicals: wanted a “simple democracy”

    7. War in the Carolinas NC’s military forces consisted of troops in the Continental Line, the state militia, and independent bands called partisans.

    8. Beginning of The End General Nathaniel Greene led American forces against General Cornwallis at the Battle of Guilford Court House On October 19, 1781, General Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, VA, ending the Revolutionary War

    9. Tory War Civil War between the Whigs (patriots) and Tories (loyalists) that was fought in NC (1780-1782)
