Bupa wellness – part of - but separate from - Bupa PMI • BUPA Health Screening founded 1970 • 1980’s computers introduced to gather data on customers results • Collaboration with Wolfson Institute of Preventative Medicine • 1990’s data published as the “BUPA study” • Vitamin E and Mortality • Albumin and mortality • Cholesterol and Blood pressure and mortality • Tar in cigarettes and mortality • Infections and heart disease

Bupa wellness • Took over a niche city based company in 1999 and rebranded • Became more proactive and took more responsibility for their customers health • Might make a diagnosis • Would initiate referral if the customer wanted this • Might prescribe (for acute illness) • Maintained interest in research • H.pylori • Abnormal thyroid function

Bupa wellness • Performs about 100.000 health assessments a year • Does about 120,000 OH consultations a year • Uses the services of about • 350 doctors, • 250 health advisers, • 120 Occupational health advisers/nurses • 6 GP practice nurses, • 26 dentists, 26 physiotherapists • 3 osteopaths • 1000 counsellors • About 15 drug/alcohol collection officers

Health Assessment - Philosophy • Tests and advice must be: • Evidence based • Growing evidence base, or accepted as useful • Of value in assessing and modifying general health • Looking for conditions and risks that can be modified or treated • Tests must not: • Be “trendy” or “gimmicky” • Give ambiguous or meaningless results

Health Assessments • Not health screening – health assessment • Health screening perhaps looks at cost-effectiveness for the population. • Health assessment – giving individuals an idea of their current health status and health risks • Based on • Detailed medical history • Blood tests • Physiological tests • Discussion and consultation • Report and action plan

  8. Outcomes • 30% of people are made aware of a medical condition of which they were not previously aware • 75% make a positive change to their lifestyle • 97% of people feel reassured about their health as a result of a health assessment
