  4. Draw Sites • Finger sticks • Median cubital vein (anticubital) • Infants-heel stick • Hand • Any other sites, especially from the feet, should not be drawn without a physician’s order • Note: never draw above an IV site

  5. There are MANY different tubes that are used to collect blood. Each has a different additive (anticoagulant) and is used for specific tests. They are NOT interchangable.

  6. Red Top • ADDITIVE: None • USES: Chemistries, Immunology and Serology, Blood Bank (Crossmatch) • MODE OF ACTIONBlood clots, and the serum is separated by centrifugation

  7. Purple Top • USES: Hematology (CBC) and Blood Bank (Crossmatch) • ADDITIVE:EDTA • MODE OF ACTION: Forms calcium salts to remove calcium • requires full draw - invert 8 times to prevent clotting and platelet clumping

  8. Green Top • USES: Chemistries • ADDITIVE:Plasma Separating Tube (PST) with Lithium heparin • MODE OF ACTION: Anticoagulates with lithium heparin; Plasma is separated with PST gel at the bottom of the tube

  9. Light Blue Top • USES: Coagulation tests full draw required • ADDITIVE:Sodium citrate • MODE OF ACTION: Forms calcium salts to remove calcium
