Gothic Architecture. History…. The Gothic period later followed the Romans in the 13 th century. People of that time wanted the Cathedrals to be brighter and more majestic and get away from the darkness of the Romanesque Period.

History… • The Gothic period later followed the Romans in the 13thcentury. • People of that time wanted the Cathedrals to be brighter and more majestic and get away from the darkness of the Romanesque Period. • To get this appearance some new architectural systems needed to be invented. • The Gothic period introduced pointed arches, ribbed vaults and flying buttresses. • The Gothic period also introduced stain glass windows that helped bring light into the buildings.
Why the different style? • Gothic structures were used for religious purposes and used a lot of symbolism. • The pointed arches created mans eyes to follow up towards to heavens. • Ribbed vaults allowed structures to be open, high and spacious. • Flying buttresses provided support so that glass could be in place of arches and other supports. • The Gothic style offered a warm feeling compared to previous structures.
