    3. WHY GO TO ALL THIS TROUBLE? NOT TROUBLE BUT A MISSION OUR YOUTH ARE PRECIOUS DIABETES –NEW MORBIDITY IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

    4. Facts Obesity has become a major health problem in American Indians only in the past 1-2 generations. Diabetes and heart disease are two leading causes of death.

    5. STATISTICS HIGHEST INCREASE IN DIABETES PREVALENCE HAS OCCURRED AMONG AI/AN ADOLESCENTS AGED 15-19 YEARS OF AGE, WITH 106% INCREASE FROM 1990 TO 2001

    6. STATISTICS DIABETES IS THE 4TH LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH AMONG NATIVE AMERICANS IN OKLAHOMA CHOCTAW NATION CURRENT DIAGNOSIS OF DIABETES IS OVER 4,000.

    7. Statistics One-third of U.S. kids are overweight, obese or at risk. In the U.S., obesity in kids has doubled in the last 20 years. In adolescents, it has tripled. About one-third of all kids under 18 are at high risk for Type 2 diabetes

    8. STATISTICS The 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey indicates that among Oklahoma high school students: 15% are overweight 16% are at risk for becoming overweight 84 % ate fruits and vegetables less that 5 times per day during the past 7 days. 62% did not meet currently recommended levels of physical activity.

    12. THE CHILDHOOD OBESITY FACTOR WHAT CONTRIBUTES? FAST PACE SOCIETY FAST FOOD IS THE NORM HOME COOKING ? NOT REALLY! TRAINED TASTE BUDS

    13. WHAT CONTRIBUTES? SCHOOL BREAKFAST AND LUNCH VENDING MACHINES LACK OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS LATCH KEY KIDS ROLE MODELS MEDIA ADVERTISING

    14. THE LITTLE TATER TOT FACTOR OUR PATCH OF LITTLE TATER TOTS WILL GROW TO BE THE COUCH POTATOES OF THE FUTURE THIS WILL PUT THEM AT RISK FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES AND HEART DISEASE

    15. DEVELOPMENT OF THE 5TH GRADE PROGRAM GETTING INSIDE A 5TH GRADER’S HEAD WHERE TO GO? WHO WILL HELP?
