12. We are delighted that you have chosen to attend a major research university--one of the top 2% of all universities in terms of research productivity. Moreover, you have become a member of the Honors College, the “engine” of Undergraduate Research here at USF. The opportunity to engage in research, scholarship or creative activity as an undergraduate is unique and will distinguish you from others as you apply to graduate and professional schools, compete for the very best jobs in the public and private sectors, and vie for competitive national awards.
We recommend that you begin to think about research now, and that you avail yourself of the services of the Office of Undergraduate Research, conveniently located within the Honors College. It will be more difficult to get research assistantships if you wait until your third or fourth year, especially if you are interested in lab sciences research.
We also recommend that you think about competing for prestigious national scholarships such as Rhodes, Marshall, Goldwater and Fulbright. Many of these are open to all majors and you can apply for some in your first year in college. Visit the website, ons.usf.edu or come by the office for a consultation.
