SWITCH-Asia Programme Background: • Initiated by the European Commission and in line with the Regional Strategy for Asia 2007-2013, managed by EuropeAid • Promote sustainable consumption and production practices in Asia by mobilizing the private and public sector • EU-funded with 150 Million Euro over the period 2007-2013 Priority Focus: • - Move SCP efforts from demonstration to replication • - Catalyse a shift in policy making towards sustainability

  3. SWITCH-Asia Components Policy Support Component Network Facility Grant projects on the ground running innovative SCP activities

SWITCH-Asia 2007-2013 Grant Projects: 81 grant projects being implemented in 16 Asian countries Project duration 24-28 months, average grant size 1.7 MEUR Network Facility: NF 1 ran from 2008 to 2013, implemented by Wuppertal Centre for SCP NF 2 began in 2013, implemented by GFA Policy Support: National PSC components in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand begun in 2010 New national PSC components to start in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in 2014 Regional part of PSC, implemented by UNEP started in 2010

Achievements of SWITCH–Asia • Grant projects have proven the benefits of SCP processes to large numbers of SMEs. • In some (but not all) cases, grant projects have successfully presented their results to policy-makers • SCP practices replicated but not yet on larger scale • 140 mil EUR spent on grants • Establishing a local knowledge on SCP and raising awareness • Increased exchange between Asia and Europe

  6. Promoting Fair Trade and Sustainable Consumption in IndiaPro-Sustain • Results • Awareness raising for trade concept. Over 60000 students were exposed to Fair Trade concept • 7000 farmers received training on sustainable farming methods • Awareness raising to nearly 3.2 mil people via cinema advertising • Umbrella branded Fair Trade shops • Policy engagement • Challenges • No fair trade policy in India • Many local producers could tap into an export market • Growing group of middle-class consumers are questioning the 'conventional' manufacturing process http://shopforchange.in/index.asp

Sustainable Production for Rattan Products - Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam • Results • Training and capacity building for SMEs (220 SMEs were introduced to cleaner production and 120 are using it) • Environmental gains • Networking with international organisations (IKEA is continuing the project) increased the access to finance and the marketability of products. • Capacity built in the participant countries to support the sector: policy linkages • Challenges: • Unsustainable harvesting • Wastage and pollution in the supply chain • The absence of standards • Unreliable and illegal trade. http://www.switch-asia.eu/multimedia/-1d1ba3aa83/
