  2. Taking Notes Effectively • Note-taking consists of: • Location: Where you sit • Participation: Gathering details • Preparation: Before class • Organization: Preparing notes • Enhancement: Adding details to notes • Resources: Using the textbook

Location, Location, Location • Where you sit in a classroom can help you or be a barrier to your success. • Sit: • Front: If you learn best by watching. • Back: If you learn best by listening. • Middle: If you daydream out the window. • Front: If the activities of people distract you. • Away from door: If you are distracted by hall noise.

Location, Location, Location • There are places that you should NOT sit and times when you need to change seats. • Don’t: • sit with your friends if you find it difficult to not chat. • sit near the back because of shyness, even though you need to see the board. • continue to sit near a person who interrupts your concentration. • be afraid to change your seat just because it is halfway through the term.

Classroom Preparation • When you arrive, don’t wait to start. • Turn OFF your cell phone, pager, or other electronic device. • Have the proper “tools” • Paper, pencil, calculator • Check your backpack for these items the night before class. • Always bring your book and open it to the current chapter. • Open your notebook and begin a fresh page for the day. • Be ready to ask the instructor about difficult homework problems • Place a mark or star next to ones you got wrong • Or make a list of hard questions the night before • Be ready to participate in discussions or group work activities .

Must learn prime numbers first A prime number is a number than is divisible only by itself and 1 Examples p. 350!2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13… Note-taking Preparation • Before you begin, label pages so that you always know where to look for information (or how to put them in order if you drop your notebook): • In the upper right date the page and indicate which class the notes are for. • Write down the topic and section number. • Leave plenty of margin space and white space you can later fill in ideas, pictures, or more examples. • A 3-ring binder is better than a spiral because it’s durable, you can move pages, and reuse it again and again!

  8. Why Take Notes? Taking Lecture Notes Helps Memory Might not be in text book. Record of the lecture Listening becomes active. It’s a useful life skill

  9. Taking Lecture Notes • Be an active listener! Listen for verbal cues such as: • Here’s an example … • In this problem … • This is a tricky problem … • Pay special attention here… • This word means … • Remember … • This will be on the test … • Here’s the most difficult step • Don’t forget to leave yourself space to fill in key words later! • Be as neat as possible and write on only one side.

Taking Lecture Notes • Don’t edit your notes in class – you’ll miss important information. • Don’t worry if you miss something: • Compare your notes with a classmate and fill in gaps • Refer to your book. • Learn by doing. • Re-write some of your notes to reinforce the material. • You can also just fix messy parts. • Review notes right after lecture! • Use your notes to create a study guide or note cards.

MALARIA Enhancing Notes • Make your notes interesting & memorable • Add color, circles, boxes, or simple pictures • Insert memory maps, matrices, flow charts, diagrams, graphs or pie charts. • Make an outline or keyword list • Doodle or be as creative as you like! Who said notes had to be boring?

Taking Book Notes • When you have a lot of reading to do, taking notes is essential. • Most of the tips for taking and enhancing lecture notes can be used for reading. • Make use of key words and idea boxes. • Work in short bursts and stop to think about what you’ve read. • Write your brief thoughts in your own words and add any pictures, memory maps, etc. • These aren’t always separate from your lecture notes, either add an extra page or include them within your lecture notes.
