  1. Definition, Classification & Diagnosis ofDiabetes & Other Dysglycemic Categories Key Messages • The chronic hyperglycemia of diabetes is associated with significant long-term sequelae, particularly damage, dysfunction and failure of various organs. • A fasting plasma glucose (FPG) level of 7.0 mmol/L correlates most closely with a 2-hour plasma glucose value of ≥11.1 mmol/L in a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test and best predicts the development of microvascular disease. This permits the diagnosis of diabetes to be made on the basis of the commonly available FPG test.

  2. Definition, Classification & Diagnosis ofDiabetes & Other Dysglycemic Categories Key Messages • The term “prediabetes” is a practical and convenient term for impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance, conditions that place individuals at risk of developing diabetes and its complications.
