Internship: universal experience for all job seekers • Creative Employment Opportunities, Inc (CEO) • Founded over 20 years ago with Employment First principals • Started official Internships with business partners in 2010 • Services are 100% integrated and community based: Assessment, Job Development, Job Coaching, Benefits Counseling, etc • CEO works with: school districts, Vocational Rehabilitation, Social Security Work Incentives (Ticket to Work, PASS), long term funding, private pay
Purpose • Internship is a universal term • Employers respect this experience • This term doesn’t set youth with disabilities apart from their peers • Provides opportunity to test drive • Youth with disabilities are able to try out a variety of employment opportunities • Employers will see that employing people with disabilities makes business sense
Purpose • Increase soft job skills • Move away from the typical employment opportunities for people with disabilities • Introduction to adult services and increase independence
How Internships at CEO work: • Part One • Partnership Agreement • Individualized agreement between CEO and the business partner (s): • Outlines roles and responsibilities of both parties (CEO and business) • Copy of Insurance Liability, specific to the business partner
How Internships at CEO work:Part Two • Job Analysis • Duties/responsibilities, skills required and acquired, supervisor , co workers, potential natural supports • Site Assessment: • Detailed information gathering! • Inside and outside of the business in regards to accessibility and access, neighborhood, the mission, values, work culture, employee dress code, scheduling, required certifications, etc • In each “sub environment” (example: sales floor, pharmacy, stock room) • Noise level, lighting, temperature, smells, flooring , staffing and number of employees
How Internships at CEO work: • Part Three • Intern Criteria and Job Description • From the site assessment: determine what Job (s) interns will perform • Work with employer on determining the ideal criteria for the intern • We use the already established job description as much as possible, if agreeing on new /carved position we often will write the intern description and get it approved by the manager/business liaison
How Internships at CEO work: • Part Four • Application and Interview process • We strive to follow the already established procedures • A job shadow is a good addition to this step!
How Internships at CEO work: • Part Five • Orientation and Training • We ask ourselves… • Will the intern go through the orientation that hired employees go through or will there be an individualized orientation? • Will there be an agreed upon amount of time for training that is or is not included in the length of the internship • Who will do the training? (Ideally the business will!)
How Internships at CEO work: • Part Six • Evaluation Process • Just like any other internship-our internships include an evaluation performed by the employer and CEO job coach • Extremely important to encourage the employer or manager to complete the evaluation HONESTLY • The employer evaluations are done with the manager, intern and job coach together • Final CEO evaluation: reviewed at end of the internship with intern, school, voc rehab (if appropriate), family, etc
How Internships at CEO work: • Part Seven • Handbook • We have followed the employee discipline procedures before • Important and useful for intern to understand that internships are taken seriously
Lessons Learned • Employers can be overwhelmed at first! • Transition aged youth have been successful in the internships • If the internships are funded through Voc Rehab-it is beneficial to pay interns. This provides a real life example for budgeting and adds to the “realness” of the experience
Lessons Learned • Need to maintain contact with internship business partners! • Silk Ties are appropriate if something happens with an intern and the internship ends abruptly • Challenging to balance parents involvement • Benefits Counseling • More hires from internships
Funding • Schools • Vocational Rehabilitation • Private Pay
