  1. Using data from Digimap in ArcGIS Wednesday 24 February 2010 James Crone Vivienne Carr

  2. Meeting content • Considerations in use of data • Unzip data • Data formats • Data conversion • Desktop sharing: Using data inArcMap - converting data, adding data, amending symbology • Resources • Q&A

  3. Downloading data from Digimap Collections I’ll login to one of the Data Download services EDINA servers – hold data for 4 Digimap Collections 1. Search Returns a data.zip file Download data file

  4. Onward use of data: considerations Process the data Import data to software Analyse data / Create map Download data file • Unzip the Digimap data file • Convert the data to an appropriate format if necessary – consider formats and conversion options • E.g. ArcGIS or MapInfo, CAD or Image software • Your data will NOT look as it does in Digimap

  5. Meeting content • Considerations in use of data • Unzip data • Data formats • Data conversion • Desktop sharing: Using data inArcMap -converting data, adding data, amending symbology • Resources • Q&A

  6. Unzip Digimap data.zip files Data download: 1. Data.zip 2. Unzip data.zip: Contents.txt, Conditions.txt, Data files

  7. Unzip OS MasterMap data files 2. Unzip data.zip: 1. Contents.txt 2. Conditions.txt 3. TOID list.txt 4. How to use the data .html 5.GZip data file 1. Data.zip 3. Unzip GZip data file: GML data file

  8. GZip files Windows standard unzip will not work – try: • Gzip, 7Zip, WinZip • May not be necessary to unzip the GZip file, depending on conversion requirements.

  9. Meeting content • Considerations in use of data • Unzip data • Data formats • Data conversion • Desktop sharing: Using data inArcMap: converting data, adding data, amending symbology • Resources • Q&A

  10. Data in Digimap – 2 types

  11. Raster data format • Digimap raster data are supplied as TIFF files. • TFW files also supplied. • Most GIS or CAD software will accept TIFF image files, with no need for conversion. • Remember to keep the supplied TIFF files and the TFW files in the same folder! Otherwise your GIS software cannot locate the TIFF geographically.

  12. Vector data formats GML format TIFF, SHP, NTF, MIF/MID, DXF, CSV format SHP, NTF, CSV, MIF/MID format CSV, XML, TAB format • Note that not every product is available in every format • Some data formats may be incompatible with software e.g. NTF, GML, DXF

  13. Vector data formats • NTF (National Transfer Format) • GML (Geography Mark-up Language) • DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) • SHP (ArcView Shapefile) • MIF/MID (MapInfo export format)

  14. Meeting content • Considerations in use of data • Unzip data • Data formats • Data conversion • Desktop sharing: Using data inArcMap - converting data, adding data, amending symbology • Resources • Q&A

  15. Shape files (SHP) • Shape files do not require any conversion prior to use in ArcGIS. • Remember to keep all files together - SHP, PRJ, DBF, SHX:

  16. NTF data • Convert to ESRI Personal Geodatabase (.MDB suffix), using Map Manager or Productivity Suite

  17. Productivity Suite, Map Manager • Available through Eduserv CHEST: • ESRI Productivity Suite (ArcGIS V9.2 or later) • Map Manager (ArcGIS V9.1 or earlier)

  18. GML (MasterMap) data Options: • Convert to ESRI Personal Geodatabase format (.MDB suffix), using Map Manager or Productivity Suite • Convert to Shape file format, using InterpOse Note: Not necessary to unzip the GZip file for either of these conversion options!

  19. InterpOse • InterpOse Digimap edition - free download for GML data: • http://www.dottedeyes.co.uk/spatial_data_loading/interpose/digimap.php

  20. ArcGIS – common conversion requirements

  24. Resources EDINA Symbology files: • OS data: • MasterMap, Strategi, Land-form Panorama, Meridian, Land-Line – in Help under Using data with ArcGIS 9.x • Geology Digimap – bundled with data download file. 1 avl file for each Shape file. • Marine Digimap – download Fonts files and Style file from Marine Digimap Help pages and copy into relevant folders in C:/Program Files.
