  1. Classroom Discussions Help or Hindrance?

  2. Helpful? • Based on personal experience, have you found classroom discussion to be helpful in your learning process? • What is the most essential part to providing a helpful and successful classroom discussion? • What are positive things that students can take away from this kind of environment?

  3. Benefits • Whole group discussions provide for greater interaction between teacher and students. • Instructors maintain a greater control over what is being taught because they are able to steer the discussion. • Auditory learners find them appealing to their learning style. • Students have a tendency to stay focused on the lesson because they might be called on to answer questions. • Students may feel more comfortable asking questions during whole group discussions. • Whole group discussion is comfortable for many teachers because it is a modified version of a lecture.

  4. Hindrance? • Based on personal experiences, have you been in a situation where classroom discussion was not helpful? • How might classroom discussions be a hindrance? • Does classroom discussion benefit all students?

  5. Negatives • Whole group discussions require setting up and enforcing ground rules for students. If these rules are not enforced then there is a possibility for the discussion to quickly go off topic. • Students who are weak in note-taking skills will have trouble understanding what they should retain from the discussion. • Some students may not be comfortable being put on the spot during discussions.

  6. “Strategies for Fostering Effective Classroom Discussions” • 1. Set clear expectations for student participation in discussion sessions. • 2. Break the ice with informal talk outside of class. • 3. Control and use classroom space strategically. • 4. Use eye contact purposefully and strategically. • 5. Avoid open questions; call on individual students. • 6. Ask good questions.

  7. Time and Place • Are discussions appropriate for all classes and classroom settings? • What is an example of a situation where discussion could be appropriate or inappropriate? • What are essentials in having a successful discussion?
