  1. QUESTION NIGHT, July 31, 2005

  2. 1. “Is it wrong to get a tattoo as a Christian?” Lev. 19:28; Gal. 3:23-25; Col. 2:14

  3. Lev. 19:26-28, “Nor print any marks upon you” appears in context with: “...divine, practice divination or fortune telling…” (Theological Wordbook of the O.T., vol. 2, p. 572) cp. Deut. 18:9-14 “enchantment,” v. 26 “pagan mourning practices” (R. K. Harrison, Leviticus: Tyndale O.T. Comm., p. 201) “Moab is laid waste….on all their heads shall be baldness, and every beard cut off”(Isa.15: 1-2). “… They shall not be buried, neith- er shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves...”(Jer.16:6) “Round corners of...heads… mar corners of … beard…. make…cuttings in your flesh for the dead,” vs. 27-28

  4. Lev. 19:26-28, “Nor print any marks upon you” appears in context with: “Neither shall there come upon thee a garment of two kinds of stuff mingled together” (v. 19, ASV)

  5. 2. “What is wrong with applauding in services?” • applause after baptism • giving Jesus a standing ovation, Lev. 10:1-2; 2 Jn. 9; Matt. 15:9

  6. Stark: “Worship is of the soul, and pertains to the inner man ….This feeling of reverence, adoration, in the heart may be manifested in different ways, in different actions; and these may properly be called acts of worship—acts produced by worship—by the emotions of the soul within....We say the kettle boils. The kettle does not boil; it is only the water in the kettle that boils. So when the heart is full of love and adoration and breaks forth in song, we by a figure of speech call it worship. So whatever act such venera- tion may produce, whether it be dancing, shouting, hand clapping, leaping, playing, singing, or thanks- giving, may by the same figure of speech be called worship, while they are only acts of worship— acts producedby the emotions of the soul—the outbreak- ings of love and veneration, exultation and adora- tion, of the heart within.” (p. 17, my emph, sw)

  7. In light of the Bible’s teaching on the danger of adding to the scripture – • Where is applauding authorized in the New Testament? What passage suggests it? • If one could applaud a person's baptism could he alsoapplaudthatperson'sprayer or song or sermon? • If applause after religious events or acts is no where to be found in the Bible, where did the idea originate - God or man? • If silence gives consent, what other acts could be justified with the same reasoning? • Why do we not also applaud those who pass the emblems as we partake of the Lord's Supper? Should we also applaud the reader of scripture?

  8. 2. “What is wrong with applauding in services?” • Some arguments for Applause in worship answered: Applause –vs— Amen Directed towards a person, 2 Cor. 4:7 “may it be fulfilled…. [hearers responded to public prayer with, sw] Amen, and thus made the substance of that was uttered their own” (Thayer, p. 32)

  9. 2. “What is wrong with applauding in services?” • Some arguments for Applause in worship answered: Some say applause is authorized under the generic command to be joyful, 1 Cor. 11:20

  10. 2. “What is wrong with applauding in services?” Further problems with applause in worship:

  11. DEAR MISS MANNERS: As a child, I was taught never to applaud in church. Now it is very common in my church and others I have attended. It seems that everything -- singing, speeches or any kind of performance -- is followed by someone saying, 'Let's give them a big hand.' Everybody applauds except me. Is this right or wrong."

  12. “GENTLE READER: You are right, but brace yourself. A lot of angry churchgoers are going to come at you with that quote about making a joyful noise unto the Lord. Miss Manners is delighted that they have the joyful noise idea, and is all for music, speaking and other decently appropriate forms of worship. But she is afraid the good people missed the part about its being directed unto the Lord, and not unto themselves. Their pleasure may be great, but it is incidental to the purpose of worship, and they should not attempt to usurp the Lord's power of passing judgment on those who are worshipping him.” (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 12/25/01, via Steven Harper, bible matters list)

  13. 2. “What is wrong with applauding in services?” Further problems with applause in worship: 1) Worship is supposed to be directed unto the Lord, Rev. 22:8-9

  15. 2. “What is wrong with applauding in services?” Further problems with applause in worship: 1) Worship is supposed to be directed unto the Lord, Rev. 22:8-9 2) It leads to wrongful judgments, 1 Sam. 16:7; Mk. 12:41-44; Acts 5:1-3; Rom. 6:17 3) It profanes worship, Ezek. 22:26

  16. Ezekiel 22:26 OUTSIDE OF GOD’S WORD: the unholy the common IN GOD’S WORD: the holy the sacred

  17. 22:26 4) Applause comes from performances, Jn. 4:23-24

  18. "People have no real reason for clapping in worship other than that they are being pushed around by cultural currents which turns worship into performance-oriented acting instead of bowing before God's throne." (Bill Lockwood, “Is Applause Appropriate in Worship?” via Matt Allen, “Applause and Worship,” bible matters list)
