  1. Ethics of Animal Use in Ecological Research By Katherine J Papacostas Temple University Biology Department

  2. Focus of Animal Use: Biomedical Research • In Biomedical research animals are used to: • study how diseases work at the cell/molecular level • to test drugs/treatments before going to clinical trials and trying them on humans • What are 3 points the Novartis video makes for animal testing? • 3 points from the PETA video against animal testing? • Video Clips of opposing viewpoints Novartis vs. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)

  3. Focus of Animal Use: Ecological Research • Ecology: the study of the interactions among living organisms and their natural environment • How do you think ecologists use animals in their research?

  4. Focus of Animal Use Ecological Research • Observational studies • In the lab • In the field • Behavioral • Surveys/Monitoring • Etc. • Experimental studies • In the lab • In the field • Behavioral (example: predator-prey) • Physiological • Chemical • Molecular • Etc, etc.

  5. Research on Animals in a Lab Setting…

  6. Regulation of Animal Use in Laboratories in the US: AALA and IACUC • American Association for Laboratory Animals (AALA): an association of professionals that advances responsible laboratory animal care and use to benefit people and animals. • The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC): an organizationthat oversees and evaluates all aspects of a research institution's animal care and use program. • Every research institution that works with animals have to establish an IACUC

  7. Research on Animals in a Field Setting…

  8. Research on Animals in a Field Setting • Reports only have to be made to AALA or IUCUC if research does NOT involve: • harming/taking samples from an animal • manipulating animals in any way • What type of research would this be? • BUT: all of these rules only apply to certain animals…

  9. Animal Life on Earth Animals that all of these rules apply to What do you notice about these animals? All vertebrates Animals with no established protocols for ethical treatment in research What do you notice about these animals? All invertebrates

  10. Biological Research on Invertebrate Animals • No rules at all • Is this ethical?
